Job Description
About Photoroom
Photoroom started in 2020 after joining Y Combinator and has grown into the leading global AI photo-editing platform. Our technology enables anyone from individual creators to global retailers to create studio-quality product images in minutes.
Our apps and API process 5+ billion images every year, serve 300 million+ users, and power workflows for well-known organisations such as Amazon, Decathlon, and DoorDash. We are profitable, scaling steadily, and backed by a strong Series B.
Our culture is rooted in craftsmanship, innovation, and helping entrepreneurs of all sizes thrive.
What This Role Involves
As a Senior Django Backend Engineer, you’ll play a key part in building and optimising the systems that power Photoroom’s core products. This is a hands-on engineering role involving architecture design, backend feature development, and continuous monitoring of performance using tools like Datadog.
You’ll ship often (we deploy backend updates multiple times a week), collaborate closely with product managers and frontend engineers, and use real-time user feedback to guide decisions.
Your Main Responsibilities
- Design, build, and maintain backend features end-to-end from planning to deployment and performance tracking.
- Improve and scale existing endpoints to minimise latency and support continued growth.
- Work with product and frontend teams to craft smooth, reliable experiences for millions of users.
- Make data-driven decisions based on product usage patterns and customer behaviour.
- Write clear API documentation and actively support internal and external developers.
What You Bring
You’ll thrive in this role if you have:
- 5+ years of backend engineering experience using Django and Django REST Framework.
- A deep understanding of large-scale relational databases (PostgreSQL/MySQL), including schema design, query optimisation, and handling DBs over 100 GB.
- Experience shipping endpoints that serve real products, written in collaboration with frontend engineers.
- A pragmatic engineering philosophy — you choose speed and iteration over unnecessary complexity, leveraging frameworks wherever possible.
- Strong ownership: you’re comfortable making technical and product decisions independently.
- Full professional fluency in English (French not required).
- If you don’t meet every requirement but believe you can contribute meaningfully, we still encourage you to apply.
Benefits & Perks
- Work from anywhere in Europe (within a 3-hour flight to Paris).
- Fully reimbursed monthly visits to our Paris HQ.
- 30 days of paid annual leave + public holidays.
- BSPCE stock options for long-term ownership.
- €1,000 home-office budget or €400/month coworking allowance.
- €1,000 yearly learning and development budget.
- Private health insurance.
- Mental wellness support through MokaCare.
- Reimbursement for cultural and sports activities.
Relocation package up to €10,000 for those choosing to move to France, including visa assistance.
Note: Visa sponsorship is only available for candidates relocating to France.
