About the Institute and Centre

The Bartlett School of Environment, Energy and Resources (BSEER) at UCL is a world-leading hub for research and teaching on sustainable transformations. Within BSEER, the UCL Institute for Sustainable Resources (ISR) delivers evidence, training, and expertise to support sustainable transitions for people and the planet.

The Centre for Net-Zero Market Design, launched in July 2024, focuses on developing innovative market approaches to accelerate net-zero electricity systems and support low-carbon investment. The Centre is funded through a mix of government and philanthropic sources and works closely with policy makers, industry partners, and international collaborators.

Role Overview

  • As Principal Research Fellow, you will serve as the Research Director of the Centre for Net-Zero Market Design, responsible for:
  • Leading research on electricity market design for net-zero systems in the UK and internationally.
  • Overseeing a small, multidisciplinary research team and mentoring early career researchers.
  • Collaborating with UK and European partners on electricity market reform projects, including in the EU and China.
  • Engaging directly with the Centre’s funders, advisory board, and UK officials on market and policy strategies.
  • Contributing to the delivery of teaching on a Masters module in Electricity Systems and Markets.
  • Supporting grant applications, publications, and the dissemination of research outputs to both academic and policy audiences.

Person Specification

Qualifications: PhD or equivalent experience in energy systems, electricity market design, or related disciplines (MSc plus relevant professional experience acceptable).

Experience:

  • Managing research teams and projects.
  • Track record of publications and policy engagement in electricity markets.
  • Knowledge of UK and European electricity market operations, commercial contract design, and trading mechanisms.
  • Experience liaising with policy makers and engaging in advisory processes (e.g., consultations and calls for evidence). Gov.uk Consultations

Skills:

  • Strong leadership, project management, and communication skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a multidisciplinary research environment.
