Role Overview
Brighton & Sussex Medical School (BSMS) invites applications from experienced Medical or Clinical Oncologists for a Clinical Associate Professor or Professor of Oncology, holding an honorary consultant contract with University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust (UHSFT).
This senior academic post combines research, teaching, and clinical leadership, with a particular focus on clinical trials. The successful candidate will act as Clinical Director for the Brighton and Sussex Clinical Trials Unit (CTU), supporting the development of the local oncology research portfolio, mentoring colleagues, and contributing to strategic growth in cancer research.
Candidates at professorial level are expected to have a broad national and international reputation, demonstrating excellence in research, education, and leadership.
Key Responsibilities
Research & Clinical Trials:
- Lead a programme of oncology research spanning both laboratory and health outcomes studies.
- Provide leadership to the Clinical Trials Unit, including mentoring academic and NHS colleagues.
- Develop strategies to increase research funding and clinical trial recruitment.
- Expand oncology research into solid and hematological malignancies across Sussex.
Teaching & Education:
- Contribute to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching in oncology and related medical fields.
- Provide leadership in experiential learning, including student placements, Student Selected Components (SSCs), and Individual Research Projects.
- Encourage clinical colleagues to engage with BSMS teaching programmes.
Clinical Practice:
- Hold a 0.5 FTE honorary consultant role at UHSFT within the Department of Oncology.
- Undertake specialist clinical duties in line with current CCT-accredited training (Medical or Clinical Oncology).
Leadership & Service:
- Support the development of a clinical academic oncology group at BSMS and UHSFT.
- Engage with external networks including the Sussex Cancer Centre and the Health and Care Research Partnership.
- Contribute to strategic planning and governance within BSMS.
Candidate Profile
Essential Qualifications & Experience:
- CCT in Medical or Clinical Oncology.
- Full registration with the General Medical Council (GMC).
- Proven track record in clinical trials, translational research, and/or oncology leadership.
- Experience in mentoring, curriculum development, and academic leadership.
Desirable Attributes:
- Experience with cross-disciplinary cancer research.
- Recognition for contributions at national or international level in oncology.
- Interest in integrating clinical trials with health outcomes and translational research.
