Job Description

About Us

UCL is a leading global university, located at the heart of London.

Within UCL, the Research Department of Primary Care & Population Health (PCPH) is a multidisciplinary academic centre devoted to improving health outcomes through research across the lifespan. We employ a wide range of methodologies—from qualitative work exploring patient experience to pragmatic trials and implementation science—to develop and test complex interventions in primary health care.

Our unit is part of the UCL Institute of Epidemiology & Healthcare (IEHC) and is affiliated with the NIHR School for Primary Care Research. We maintain strong connections with the NIHR Schools of Public Health and Social Care, which provide rich opportunities for cross‑disciplinary collaboration, funding, and access to both local and national primary care networks and data resources.

In addition, our Primary Care Education Group is internationally recognised for excellence in clinical education research, particularly within general practice settings.

Role Overview

This is an NIHR‑funded Clinical Lectureship, offering post‑doctoral training over up to four years. We seek a General Practitioner (GP) with exceptional promise to grow into a leader in clinical education research within primary care. In this role, you will:

Design and deliver a cohesive research programme focused on clinical education in primary healthcare (for example: GP training, patient education, continuing professional development).

  • Lead innovative studies combining educational theory, pedagogy, and primary care practice.
  • Work collaboratively with academic, clinical, and educational stakeholders (including NHS, medical schools, and other institutions).
  • Publish in high-quality peer-reviewed journals, contribute to conference presentations, and build your independent researcher profile.
  • Potentially teach or mentor within UCL’s clinical education activities, training the next generation of primary care researchers and educators.

Appointment Terms & Remuneration

  • Salary: Starting at CL8.12 (£82,701) + Market Supplement (£17,383) = £100,084, plus London Allowance £4,678 (pro rata).
  • Duration: Fixed-term, up to 4 years, based on external NIHR funding.
  • Conditions: Appointment contingent on PhD (or equivalent) being confirmed by the start date (target: 1 September 2026).

Candidate Profile

The ideal candidate will demonstrate:

  • A medical qualification and experience as a GP (including completion of GP vocational training, MRCGP or equivalent).
  • Submission of a completed PhD or MD thesis by the time of application, with full award by 1 September 2026.
  • Potential for developing into an independent researcher and academic educator in clinical education.
  • Evidence of leadership, teamwork, and excellence in both clinical and research settings.

Experience (or strong interest) in cross-sector collaboration—e.g., working with NHS organisations, medical education bodies, and academic institutions.

What We Offer

  • Annual Leave: 41 days (27 days annual leave + 8 bank holidays + 6 UCL closure days)
  • Pension: Career Average Revalued Earnings (CARE) pension scheme

Other Benefits:

  • Cycle-to-work scheme
  • Season ticket loan
  • Immigration and relocation support (where applicable)
  • On-site nursery and gym
  • Employee Assistance Programme (Staff Support Service)
  • Enhanced parental pay (maternity, paternity, adoption)
