Role Overview

Brighton and Sussex Medical School (BSMS) is inviting applications from experienced and practising General Practitioners for a senior academic post at either Clinical Associate Professor or Professor level. This appointment will strengthen the Department of Primary Care & Public Health by contributing to our teaching excellence, expanding research leadership, and supporting strategic developments across the School.

Successful candidates will shape the future of general practice education and research at BSMS, taking a central role in delivering high-quality undergraduate and postgraduate experiences while advancing scholarly work that influences the wider healthcare landscape.

Key Responsibilities

Research Leadership

You will set the direction of your own research programme, ideally in an area aligned with established BSMS strengths such as:

  • global and infectious disease
  • cancer research
  • mental health
  • health inequalities
  • prevention and population health
  • coastal community health challenges

The postholder will work collaboratively with colleagues across BSMS and through regional partnerships, including the NIHR Applied Research Collaboration (ARC) for Kent, Surrey and Sussex.

Education & Teaching

Your academic leadership will contribute to the continuing development of general practice teaching across the curriculum. Responsibilities include:

  • delivering and developing teaching in primary care
  • supporting innovative learning experiences for BMBS students
  • contributing to curriculum design and assessment
  • encouraging GP practices across the region to participate in student placements, SSCs, and research projects
  • Professorial candidates will additionally contribute to School-level strategy, governance, and long-term planning.

Clinical Practice

The successful applicant will undertake a 0.2 FTE clinical role within a local GP practice and will hold an appropriate honorary contract with NHS England.

We are seeking a practising GP with:

  • a strong academic track record
  • proven ability to lead high-quality research
  • enthusiasm for teaching and educational innovation
  • commitment to widening participation, student support, and development of the GP workforce
  • experience working collaboratively across academic and clinical organisations
  • Applicants for a Professor post must demonstrate national and international leadership, a sustained record of excellence, and a significant contribution to the discipline.
