About the Role

Barts Health NHS Trust is seeking motivated individuals to join our Healthcare Support Worker (HCA) team at Newham Hospital. This role is ideal for those new to healthcare, providing structured support and training to develop into a Band 3 HCA within six months, subject to successful competency completion. Until then, appointments are made at Band 2.

You will work under the supervision of registered nurses, undertaking delegated clinical duties to ensure high standards of patient care, safety, and comfort.

Key Responsibilities

As a Senior Healthcare Support Worker, your duties may include:

  • Conducting patient observations (vital signs, basic monitoring)
  • Supporting patients with personal care and mobility
  • Assisting with nutrition and hydration needs
  • Performing a limited range of delegated clinical tasks, e.g., blood pressure, ECG recording, MRSA screening
  • Supporting simple wound dressings
  • Maintaining accurate patient records and ensuring data integrity
  • Participating in teamwork and clinical governance activities
  • You will receive guidance and supervision to complete Band 3 competencies and progress in your career.

Person Specification

Essential Qualifications & Skills:

  • Completion of the Care Certificate or equivalent
  • Basic literacy and numeracy (e.g., GCSE English and Maths or equivalent)
  • Demonstrated experience working in a clinical healthcare setting
  • Ability to provide high-quality patient care
  • Strong interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills
  • Basic IT/computer skills for patient record-keeping
  • Knowledge of health and safety protocols, manual handling, and infection control

Desirable:

  • Level 2 Support Worker Apprenticeship
  • Experience supervising junior staff or trainees
  • Willingness to undertake additional training for professional development
