Job Description
Position Overview
The University of Reading is seeking a Post-Doctoral Research Assistant (PDRA) to join the LEMONTREE project (Land Ecosystem Models based On New Theory, observations and Experiments). This full-time, fixed-term position offers an exciting opportunity to contribute to cutting-edge research on functional biodiversity and eco-evolutionary optimality (EEO) modelling.
The PDRA will focus on the statistical analysis of plant trait data and the development of a theoretical framework linking functional trait diversity to environmental constraints. This work will support the creation and refinement of an EEO-based modelling framework, including evaluation using field and laboratory experiments. The role involves collaboration with scientists from the University of Reading, Imperial College London, and Tsinghua University.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct statistical analyses of plant trait datasets.
- Develop a theoretical framework linking functional biodiversity to environmental constraints.
- Support the design and optimisation of eco-evolutionary models based on EEO principles.
- Evaluate and improve model performance using field and laboratory data.
- Collaborate with LEMONTREE project scientists and team members across partner institutions.
- Contribute to research publications, reports, and presentations.
- Manage own workload, planning and prioritising tasks to meet strict project deadlines.
Essential Skills & Qualifications
- PhD in Environmental Science or a closely related discipline by the start date.
- Strong understanding of functional traits, biodiversity, and their environmental controls.
- Knowledge of eco-evolutionary optimality concepts and modelling approaches.
- Proficiency in programming (e.g., R, Python, MATLAB) for data analysis and model development.
- Familiarity with relevant data sources for model evaluation.
- Previous research experience with a track record of scientific publications.
- Ability to work independently, taking initiative and managing multiple priorities.
Eligibility & Visa Guidance
Applicants requiring UK Skilled Worker visa sponsorship should ensure eligibility before applying. The University cannot advise at the application stage but will discuss visa options with candidates invited for interview.
Why Join Us?
