Role Overview

Brighton & Sussex Medical School (BSMS) invites applications for a practicing General Practitioner (GP) to join as a Clinical Associate Professor or Professor of General Practice. This senior academic position combines teaching, research, and clinical engagement within the Department of Primary Care & Public Health.

The postholder will provide leadership across teaching and research, contributing to strategic planning and the ongoing development of BSMS. Professorial candidates are expected to demonstrate national and international influence in their field, including excellence in research, innovation, and academic leadership.

Key Responsibilities

Research:

  • Lead an independent programme of research aligned with BSMS strengths, including global health, infection, cancer, and mental health.
  • Engage with cross-cutting themes: health inequalities, population health, prevention, and coastal health.
  • Collaborate with BSMS colleagues and NIHR Applied Research Collaboration (ARC) networks across Kent, Surrey & Sussex.
  • Mentor and support colleagues in research development.

Teaching:

  • Contribute to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching in general practice.
  • Provide leadership in delivering high-quality GP experiences to BMBS students.
  • Support student-led projects, placements, and research initiatives.
  • Encourage engagement of external GP colleagues in teaching and training programmes.

Clinical:

  • Establish a 0.2 FTE clinical role in a local GP practice with an appropriate honorary NHS contract.

Leadership & Service:

  • Undertake formal leadership responsibilities within BSMS and across the University as appropriate.
  • Contribute to academic governance, strategic planning, and operational management of teaching and research programmes.

Candidate Profile

Essential Qualifications & Experience:

  • Fully registered with the General Medical Council (GMC).
  • Active membership on the NHS GP Performers List.
  • Evidence of sustained research leadership and output in relevant areas.
  • Track record of high-quality teaching and curriculum development.
  • Ability to combine academic, teaching, and clinical responsibilities effectively.

Desirable Attributes:

  • Previous experience in research leadership and cross-disciplinary collaboration.
  • Experience in mentoring or supervising early-career researchers and students.
  • Recognition at national/international level in general practice or primary care research.
