PCPH forms part of the UCL Institute of Epidemiology & Health Care (IEHC) and plays a leading role in the NIHR School for Primary Care Research, while maintaining strong collaborative links with the NIHR Schools of Public Health and Social Care. Our Primary Care Education Group is internationally recognised for advancing clinical education research and excellence in teaching.
About the Role
This NIHR-funded post offers up to four years of post-doctoral academic training, designed specifically for a General Practitioner who shows exceptional promise as a future independent researcher, educator, and leader in clinical education research within the primary care context.
The successful applicant will develop a coherent and impactful programme of research focused on clinical education in primary health care, while also contributing to UCL’s research-led teaching and academic community.
Key Appointment Details
Salary:
- CL8.12: £82,701
- Market Supplement: £17,383
- London Allowance: £4,678
Total package: £104,762 (pro-rata if applicable) - Contract: Fixed-term (initially four years, funded externally)
- Appointment requires the award and confirmation of a PhD/MD (must be fully awarded before post start date 01/09/2026).
- Employment is governed by UCL Terms and Conditions for Research & Professional Services Staff.
- The role meets immigration requirements for sponsorship under a Skilled Worker Visa or Global Talent Visa.
Eligibility Requirements
Applicants must:
- Be fully registered with the General Medical Council
- Be included on the NHS GP Performers List
- Have completed GP vocational training and hold MRCGP (or equivalent)
- Have submitted their PhD/MD thesis at the time of application and be formally awarded by 1 September 2026
- Demonstrate strong potential for academic independence in clinical education research
- Under NIHR rules, applicants cannot have previously completed another NIHR Clinical Lectureship
- A Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check is also required.
What You Will Do
- Develop an innovative and high-quality research portfolio in primary care clinical education
- Pursue post-doctoral academic training leading towards research independence
- Contribute to teaching and curriculum development within the department
- Collaborate with research groups across the NIHR Schools and wider UCL IEHC
- Publish, disseminate, and translate research findings to improve clinical education practice
- Engage with local and national primary care networks for research development
- Make use of extensive training, mentorship, and networking opportunities across NIHR programmes
About You
We are seeking candidates who:
- Are registered GPs with completed specialty training
- Hold or will soon attain a PhD/MD in a relevant area
- Have clear ambition to become leaders in clinical education research
- Can demonstrate research excellence, teaching capability, and a commitment to academic development
- Are motivated to work at the interface of education, primary care, and health services research
