Role Overview
The History Department at the University of Sussex invites applications for a fixed-term Assistant Professor position in Modern European History.

Key Responsibilities
In this position, you will contribute to both teaching and academic support activities across the History programme.
Your main responsibilities will include:
- Teaching and Academic Delivery
- Deliver lectures and seminars across undergraduate history modules.
Contribute to core modules likely to include:
- The Making of the Modern World
- The Making and Unmaking of Europe from the 1870s to the Present
- Historical Controversy
- History of Emotions
- Supervise undergraduate dissertations and provide academic mentoring to students.
- Assessment and Student Support
- Design and mark coursework and examinations.
- Provide constructive feedback to support student development.
- Offer academic guidance through office hours and pastoral support.
Academic Engagement
- Contribute to departmental teaching development and curriculum innovation.
- Work collaboratively with colleagues in a supportive academic environment.
- Maintain and develop your research profile through publications and scholarly activity.
Candidate Profile
Applicants should demonstrate both academic expertise and teaching experience in modern European history.
Essential Requirements
You must have:
- A PhD in Modern European History (excluding British Isles history).
- Teaching experience within the UK Higher Education sector.
- Strong communication and presentation skills.
- A developing research and publication profile.
- Evidence of effective student support and engagement.
- Ability to collaborate productively within a collegial department.
Desirable Expertise
Specialist knowledge in one or more of the following areas will be advantageous:
- Global or transnational histories of modern Europe
- Histories of genocide
- Histories of emotion
Experience supervising undergraduate dissertations would also be beneficial.
