Role Overview
Brighton & Sussex Medical School (BSMS), in collaboration with University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust (UHSFT), invites applications for a Clinical Associate Professor or Professor of Oncology. The successful candidate will hold an honorary consultant contract, providing clinical leadership and expertise in oncology clinical trials.
The postholder will act as Clinical Director of the Brighton and Sussex Clinical Trials Unit (CTU) and collaborate closely with the Sussex Cancer Centre, Health and Care Research Partnership, and other partners across Sussex.
As a senior clinical academic, you will:
- Lead your own oncology research programme, including clinical trials.
- Contribute to BSMS teaching and mentorship for undergraduate and postgraduate students.
- Help expand cancer research initiatives, including translational and clinical trials in solid and haematological malignancies.
- Support the development of a clinical academic oncology group in Sussex.
- Funding applications, grant acquisition, and research leadership are key components of this role.
Key Responsibilities
Research & Clinical Trials
- Lead oncology clinical trials portfolio, enhancing academic-led studies across UHSFT.
- Provide mentorship to academic and NHS researchers in oncology trial design, conduct, and reporting.
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams in the Sussex Cancer Research Centre (SCRC): https://www.bsms.ac.uk/research/scrc
Academic Leadership
- Develop and deliver research-led teaching in oncology for BMBS and postgraduate students.
- Support student-led clinical oncology activities, including Student Selected Components (SSCs) and 4th-year Individual Research Projects.
- Drive strategies to increase research income and clinical trial recruitment.
Clinical Leadership
- Hold a 0.5 FTE honorary consultant role in the UHSFT Department of Oncology.
- Provide specialist clinical input across cancer services, including solid and haematological malignancies.

Collaboration & Partnership
- Engage with external networks to strengthen teaching and research links across Sussex and nationally.
- Support the development of clinical academic posts within BSMS and the NHS Trust.
- Contribute to broader initiatives in population health, health inequalities, and translational research.
Candidate Profile
Essential Qualifications
- CCT in Medical or Clinical Oncology.
- Track record in clinical trials and academic research.
- Experience in research leadership, grant writing, and mentoring.
Skills & Competencies
- Strong leadership and organisational abilities.
- Ability to engage multidisciplinary teams across academic and NHS settings.
- Excellent communication and teaching skills.
