About the Role
Brighton & Sussex Medical School (BSMS) is seeking a practising General Practitioner (GP) to join the Department of Primary Care & Public Health as either an Associate Professor or Professor of General Practice.
This is a senior academic role, combining research, teaching, and leadership responsibilities. Candidates will demonstrate academic excellence, provide strategic input into departmental initiatives, and support the management and planning priorities of the School and University.
The role includes:
- Leading a research programme aligned with BSMS strategic priorities, including global health, infection, cancer, mental health, health inequalities, population health, prevention, and coastal community health.
- Contributing to research-led undergraduate and postgraduate teaching in general practice.
- Collaborating with NIHR Applied Research Collaborations (ARC) across Kent, Surrey & Sussex to support primary care research engagement.
- Providing leadership in student-focused general practice activities, including placements, Student Selected Components, and research projects.
- Engaging external organisations to strengthen partnerships in undergraduate and postgraduate GP education.
- Establishing a 0.2 FTE clinical role in a local GP practice, with appropriate honorary NHS contract.
- Professorial candidates will additionally demonstrate sustained international impact in research, teaching, and academic leadership, undertaking formal school-level leadership responsibilities.
About You
The ideal candidate will:
- Be a practising GP with academic experience in teaching and research.
- Have a proven track record in clinical research leadership and scholarly publications.
- Be experienced in teaching and mentoring undergraduate and postgraduate students.
- Be skilled at collaborative working across academic and NHS settings.
- Hold or be eligible for an honorary NHS contract.
- Demonstrate strategic thinking and capacity for leadership in medical education.
- Understanding of health inequalities, population health, and primary care research is highly desirable.
