Job Description

Role Summary

The School of Mathematical, Physical & Computational Sciences invites applications for a Postdoctoral Research Associate specialising in the analysis of partial differential equations (PDEs), with a focus on the analytical study of eigenfunctions of elliptic operators.

The position is funded through a UK Research & Innovation project, Understanding the Hot Spots Conjecture for Planar Domains, led by Dr Sugata Mondal. The successful applicant will join a vibrant research environment, working within a team contributing to contemporary challenges in Analysis, Spectral Geometry and related fields.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct high-quality independent research relating to PDEs, eigenfunctions of elliptic operators, geometric analysis, or spectral geometry.
  • Collaborate closely with the project lead and other academic colleagues.
  • Prepare research outputs including publications, conference presentations and technical reports.
  • Engage with the wider mathematical community through seminars, workshops and networking events.
  • Contribute to the academic life of the Department, which may include mentoring postgraduate researchers or supporting occasional teaching activities.

Candidate Profile

Essential Qualifications & Experience

  • A PhD in Mathematics (or near completion at the time of appointment).
  • Strong research background in one or more of the following:
  • Analysis of PDEs
  • Geometric Analysis
  • Spectral Geometry
  • Ability to work independently and within a collaborative research setting.
  • Excellent communication skills and an emerging track record of scholarly outputs.

Desirable Attributes

  • Research experience specifically involving the study of eigenfunctions of elliptic differential operators.
  • Demonstrated ability to contribute to a funded research project.

Visa & Eligibility Information

  • Applicants who may require sponsorship under the Skilled Worker Route are encouraged to review the relevant guidance before applying.
  • The University will only discuss visa routes with candidates shortlisted for interview.
