Role Overview

Brighton & Sussex Medical School (BSMS), in partnership with University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust, invites applications for a Clinical Associate Professor or Professor of Oncology. This senior academic role includes an honorary consultant contract, with a focus on clinical trials, research leadership, and education.

The postholder will:

  • Lead the Brighton and Sussex Clinical Trials Unit (CTU), providing strategic direction and clinical leadership.
  • Drive the development of the oncology trial portfolio, including solid and haematological malignancies.
  • Support the Sussex Cancer Centre and Health and Care Research Partnership, fostering interdisciplinary research collaboration.
  • Mentor research-active clinicians and academics, enhancing cancer research capacity in Sussex.

Key Responsibilities

Research & Clinical Trials

  • Lead your own research programme in oncology, including laboratory, translational, and health outcomes research.
  • Support the design, implementation, and oversight of clinical trials in the CTU.
  • Contribute to increasing research income, trial recruitment, and collaborative research across BSMS and NHS partners.

Education & Leadership

  • Contribute to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, particularly BMBS students.
  • Lead student placements, Student Selected Components (SSCs), and Individual Research Projects in clinical/medical oncology.
  • Support career development for academic and NHS colleagues.
  • Undertake formal leadership roles at the School and departmental level.

Clinical Duties

  • Serve as an honorary consultant in the Department of Oncology (0.5 FTE) at University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust.
  • Provide high-quality patient care in line with clinical guidelines and best practice.

Candidate Profile

Essential:

  • CCT in Medical or Clinical Oncology
  • Significant experience leading clinical trials and oncology research
  • Strong track record in academic leadership, research funding, and publication
  • Ability to contribute to interdisciplinary and translational research initiatives

Desirable:

  • Experience in mentoring academic and clinical colleagues
  • Expertise across multiple tumour types (solid or haematological malignancies)
  • Knowledge of research infrastructure, governance, and regulatory requirements
