Overview of the Role
The University of Sussex is seeking a dedicated Student Casework Manager (SCM) to jointly oversee its casework function within the Complaints and Conduct Team. Working alongside an established SCM, you will ensure that the University manages student complaints, disciplinary matters, and criminal convictions cases responsibly, sensitively, and in alignment with institutional policies and national standards.
A significant aspect of the post involves leading on high-risk, complex, and sensitive matters, including cases involving sexual misconduct. You will clerk Misconduct Panel Hearings, advise senior decision-makers, and ensure that outcomes are robust, proportionate, and compliant with legal expectations.
You will also act as a central liaison between the University and the Office of the Independent Adjudicator (OIA), offering institutional advice, managing risk, and ensuring that responses reflect sector best practice.
Beyond casework, you will contribute to enhancing systems, workflows, training, and safeguarding approaches across the institution. Collaboration with academic and professional service teams will be essential to strengthen student experience while mitigating legal and reputational risks.
About You
We are looking for an accomplished caseworker with:
- Demonstrated experience managing complex investigations using a trauma-informed approach.
- The resilience and composure required for cases involving distressing or sensitive subject matter.
- A degree-level qualification (or equivalent professional experience).
- Ideally, experience in the higher education environment or within the criminal justice system.
- Excellent organisational and digital skills, with the capacity to manage your own caseload and support colleagues where needed.
- Clear and confident communication abilities suited to engagement with students, academic staff, senior leaders, and external bodies.
- A strong personal commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion is essential, and you should be confident embedding these principles into everyday practice.

The role sits within the University’s Student Experience division, which includes services such as Academic Quality, Student Records, Wellbeing, Complaints & Conduct, and Careers & Entrepreneurship.
