Overview of the Role
Brighton & Sussex Medical School (BSMS) is inviting applications from practicing General Practitioners for a senior academic appointment at either Associate Professor or Professor level. This is an opportunity to play a major role in shaping primary care research, teaching, and leadership within a collaborative medical school jointly established by the Universities of Brighton and Sussex.
The successful appointee will join the Department of Primary Care & Public Health, contributing to a strong research environment and helping drive innovation across general practice education and primary care engagement.
What You Will Do
In this senior academic post, you will:
Research Leadership
Lead an independent research programme aligned to BSMS strengths, especially in:
global health, infection, cancer, mental health, health inequalities, prevention, and coastal community health.
- Support the strategic development of primary care research across BSMS and the NIHR Applied Research Collaboration (ARC) for Kent, Surrey & Sussex.
- Strengthen research capacity among GP colleagues and support cross-faculty collaborations.
Teaching & Academic Development
- Contribute to the design, delivery, and enhancement of undergraduate and postgraduate teaching in general practice.
- Provide leadership in ensuring BMBS students receive an outstanding educational experience in primary care settings.
- Support student-led initiatives, career pathways and general-practice academic development.
- Expand GP engagement across the curriculum, placements, and research opportunities.
Professional & External Engagement
- Hold a 0.2 FTE clinical role within a local GP practice and secure an honorary NHS England contract.
- Develop partnerships across professional networks, postgraduate training bodies, and local NHS organisations.
- Represent BSMS at regional, national and international levels (professorial level applicants are expected to demonstrate sustained, exceptional achievement and leadership).
About You
We are looking for a GP with:
- A strong and growing academic profile appropriate to Associate Professor or Professor level.
- A track record of high-quality research, including funding, publications, and collaboration across disciplinary boundaries.
- Proven leadership in medical education, curriculum development and student support.
- Ability to communicate complex ideas clearly and influence a wide range of stakeholders.
- Commitment to inclusive practice and to improving the pipeline of future GP academics.
- For Professor appointments, applicants must evidence exceptional and sustained contributions in research, education, leadership, and external engagement.
