Job Description
Position Overview
The University of Reading is seeking an enthusiastic Research Scientist to join a team investigating the storylines of extreme weather events. As climate extremes increase in frequency and intensity, understanding both historical changes and potential near-future variations is essential for informing climate adaptation strategies.
The successful candidate will focus on comparing different storyline approaches to event attribution, translating past extreme events into alternative climates to assess how these events and their impacts would vary in warmer or cooler “counter-factual” scenarios.
This role offers the opportunity to collaborate with international partners including the Met Office, KNMI, and ECMWF/C3S, and to contribute to a high-profile, operationally relevant research programme.
Key Responsibilities
- Analyse storyline simulations of recent extreme events using datasets such as 20th Century Reanalysis (20CRv3) and DESTIN-E systems.
- Evaluate the consistency of different storyline approaches in estimating changes in extreme weather events.
- Produce recommendations for operational attribution methods for future extreme weather events.
- Collaborate with international project partners and integrate findings into ongoing scientific research.
- Communicate research results effectively through reports, publications, and presentations.
Essential Skills & Qualifications
- PhD (or equivalent experience) in physical sciences, meteorology, climate science, or mathematical sciences.
- Strong understanding of climate reanalyses and the dynamics of extreme weather events.
- Proven experience in analyzing climate datasets or reanalyses.
- Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and programming skills (e.g., Python, R, MATLAB).
- Ability to communicate complex findings clearly and build productive collaborations with internal and external stakeholders.
Eligibility & Visa Guidance
Applicants considering sponsorship under the UK Skilled Worker Route should check their eligibility and points requirements before applying. The University can discuss visa options for shortlisted candidates.
