About the Department
The Biomedical Ultrasound Group at UCL’s Department of Medical Physics and Biomedical Engineering is internationally recognized for its cutting-edge research in therapeutic ultrasound, ultrasonic neuromodulation, and ultrasound metrology. Our diverse team of researchers and PhD students works across areas including physical acoustics, numerical modelling, ultrasonic instrumentation, and in vivo experimentation.

Role Overview
We are seeking a Postdoctoral Research Fellow to contribute to UKRI-funded projects exploring:
- Transcranial ultrasonic neuromodulation
- Ultrasonic rewarming of cryopreserved biological materials
Key responsibilities include
- Conducting experimental research in ultrasound physics and therapeutic applications.
- Characterizing laboratory and clinical ultrasound sources, including measurement of ultrasound fields.
- Designing and building experimental setups, phantoms, and ultrasonic hardware.
- Validating computational models of ultrasound propagation in complex biological media.
- Preparing research outputs, presenting findings at conferences, and contributing to peer-reviewed publications.
Candidate Profile
Applicants should hold:
- A Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) in Engineering or Physical Sciences.
- A PhD in acoustics, physics, engineering, biomedical engineering, or a related field (or equivalent experience).
- Strong practical skills in acoustics, ultrasound physics, ultrasound systems, and metrology techniques.
Desirable skills include:
- Experience with therapeutic ultrasound
- Material acoustic characterization
- Programming and signal processing using Matlab
- Personal qualities: strong communication, teamwork, professionalism, and commitment to equality, diversity, and inclusion.
Funding and Duration
- This post is funded for 2 years initially, ending 31st October 2028.
- International candidates are welcome; the role qualifies for UK Skilled Worker visa or Global Talent visa sponsorship.
