Overview of the Opportunity
Livewell Southwest is seeking an experienced and motivated Senior Psychological Wellbeing Practitioner (Senior PWP) to join our expanding NHS Talking Therapies service in Plymouth. This role is ideal for a qualified, accredited PWP who is passionate about clinical supervision, service development, and supporting the next generation of practitioners.

Role Purpose
The Senior PWP will play a central role in supporting the professional development of trainees, newly qualified PWPs, and established PWP colleagues. Working closely with the Lead PWP and senior leadership, you will contribute to supervision, service planning, and quality improvement across the NHS Plymouth Talking Therapies service.
This role forms part of Livewell’s seven-day service model, and staff are expected to work flexibly across the week.
Key Responsibilities
1. Clinical Delivery
- Conduct suitability and screening assessments via telephone, virtual consultations or face-to-face appointments for individuals entering the NHS Talking Therapies pathway.
- Provide low-intensity (LI) psychological interventions for mild–moderate depression and anxiety disorders, including guided self-help, cCBT (SilverCloud), and psychoeducational groups.
- Deliver treatments in line with NICE-recommended approaches for common mental health conditions.
- Work collaboratively with multi-agency partners and follow safeguarding guidance when managing risk.
- Use IAPTus and Talking Therapies Minimum Data Set (MDS) tools to record accurate outcome data, progress, and treatment planning.
- Support junior PWP staff by reviewing treatment plans and ensuring safe, evidence-based care.
2. Leadership & Team Support
- Provide supervision, caseload oversight, and leadership for a defined group of PWPs.
- Support the Lead PWP in maintaining service quality through audits, training needs analysis, and monitoring documentation standards.
- Contribute to the design and delivery of the PWP preceptorship programme for new practitioners.
- Assist in service planning by monitoring appointment volumes, workshop delivery, and overall PWP activity.
- Represent the service at internal and external meetings, offering professional leadership and sharing best practice.
- Promote the NHS Talking Therapies model across Livewell Southwest and among external referrers.
3. Professional Practice
- Maintain up-to-date knowledge of clinical guidance, Talking Therapies policies, and national practice developments.
- Attend regular clinical and managerial supervision sessions.
- Keep accurate CPD portfolios and ensure compliance with Livewell’s mandatory training.
- Maintain high standards of confidentiality in accordance with local and national policy.
- Model professional values and high-quality clinical practice for junior colleagues.
4. Communication & Administration
- Communicate effectively and sensitively with service users, families, colleagues, and partner agencies.
- Support team members with accurate and efficient clinical record keeping on IAPTus.
- Escalate clinical or operational risks promptly and complete incident reporting as needed.
5. Education, Training & Workforce Support
- Identify learning needs through supervision and appraisal processes.
- Support new staff during induction and guide trainees through competencies.
- Contribute to recruitment, health-rostering, wellbeing signposting, and workforce development activities.

Essential Skills & Qualities
- Reflective, self-aware, and able to use supervision constructively.
- Confident supervising and line managing others with senior leadership support.
- Skilled in building collaborative therapeutic relationships.
- Able to prioritise work effectively and manage competing demands.
- Respectful of diversity, autonomy, confidentiality, and cultural difference.
- Strong communication abilities (written and verbal).
- Competent IT user with the ability to analyse data for clinical and operational needs.
- Experience supporting service change or improvement initiatives.
Essential Experience
- Significant experience in an NHS Talking Therapies (formerly IAPT) service.
- Experience in primary care mental health settings.
- Demonstrated capability delivering a broad range of LI interventions.
- Experience working with suicidal clients, self-harm, safeguarding, and complex presentations.
- Delivery of groups, workshops, or training sessions.
- Multi-disciplinary working experience.
Desirable Experience
- Experience in more than one Talking Therapies service.
- Experience supervising or mentoring others.
- Work within the voluntary/third-sector mental health field.
Qualifications
Essential
- Degree-level study (or equivalent demonstrable experience).
- Postgraduate Certificate in Psychological Wellbeing Practice (IAPT PWP training).
- Accreditation with BABCP, or evidence of working toward full accreditation.
- Training and experience in clinical risk assessment and management.
Desirable
- Accredited supervision training.
