About the Role
TEWV NHS Foundation Trust is seeking a Consultant Psychiatrist to join our Hartlepool CAMHS “Getting More Help” team, providing expert leadership and clinical care for children and young people up to the age of 18. This is an exciting opportunity to shape the future of CAMHS services and tailor the role to develop your clinical interests within our broad portfolio.
The post involves direct patient care, multidisciplinary collaboration, and the potential to contribute to service transformation, training, and research. You will also have the opportunity to become a GMC-registered educational or clinical supervisor, supporting the next generation of psychiatrists.

Hartlepool serves a population of around 93,000, of which approximately 25% are under 18, providing a diverse and dynamic clinical environment.
Key Responsibilities
Clinical Work
- Provide psychiatric assessment, diagnosis, and holistic care planning for children and adolescents referred to the service.
- Manage a varied caseload, including new patient assessments (approx. 2 per week) and follow-up reviews (approx. 650 face-to-face contacts per year for full-time consultants).
- Deliver care in the clinical base, patients’ homes, schools, or other community settings where appropriate.
- Work collaboratively with the CAMHS Crisis Team, which operates 24/7, to support out-of-hours care and alternatives to hospital admission.
- Apply the Mental Health Act (MHA) and Mental Capacity Act (MCA) in clinical decision-making.
Leadership & Development
- Take a leadership role within the multidisciplinary team (MDT), promoting service improvement and innovation.
- Engage in quality improvement initiatives, audit, and service evaluation.
- Provide supervision and mentorship to junior medical staff and trainees.
Education & Research
- Deliver undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, supporting clinical education in CAMHS.
- Contribute to research, service evaluation, and evidence-based practice to improve patient care.

Person Specification
Qualifications & Registration
Essential:
- MB BS (or equivalent medical qualification)
- Full GMC registration with licence to practise
- MRCPsych (or recognised equivalent)
- Section 12-approved (or willing to achieve within 3 months)
- Approved Clinician (AC) status or willingness to obtain
Desirable:
- Higher degree or postgraduate qualification in medical education, research, or management
- Experience in specialist/sub-specialist CAMHS services
Clinical Knowledge & Skills
Essential:
- Broad knowledge of child and adolescent mental health, with clinical expertise in psychiatric assessment and treatment
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
- Ability to manage clinical complexity and uncertainty
- Competent in multidisciplinary collaboration and holistic, bio-psycho-social care
Desirable:
- Experience in neurodevelopmental assessment, eating disorders, forensic CAMHS, or learning disability CAMHS
- Participation in clinical research, audit, and service evaluation
Leadership & Academic Skills
Essential:
- Reflective practitioner, open to feedback
- Ability to influence and improve services through leadership
- Commitment to continuous professional development (CPD)
- Experience in teaching and mentoring
Desirable:
- Familiarity with quality improvement methodologies
- Track record of audit, research, publications, or educational contributions
