Job Description

The Opportunity

Somerset NHS Foundation Trust is inviting applications for a Consultant Obstetrician to join its expanding maternity service at Musgrove Park Hospital. This newly created post reflects ongoing investment in high-risk obstetric care and the development of a dedicated elective caesarean section service.

This is an obstetrics-only role, with no gynaecology commitments, offering the chance to work in a collaborative, consultant-led environment delivering near-tertiary level care within a district general hospital setting.

We are particularly interested in candidates with a strong background in high-risk obstetrics and fetal surveillance, including expertise in fetal growth scanning and Doppler assessment for small-for-gestational-age (SGA) and growth-restricted pregnancies.

Your Clinical Focus

In this role, you will:

  • Deliver high-quality obstetric care across inpatient, outpatient, and emergency settings
  • Lead fetal monitoring services across Musgrove Park Hospital and Yeovil District Hospital, supporting training, compliance, and quality improvement
  • Perform fetal growth scans and Doppler assessments, with responsibility for SGA surveillance
  • Run a weekly ultrasound clinic and a fortnightly high-risk antenatal clinic
  • Cover elective caesarean section lists and obstetric triage sessions
  • Participate in the obstetric-only on-call rota (1:12), including twice-daily consultant ward rounds
  • Supervise junior doctors and contribute to teaching, appraisal, and professional development
  • Engage actively in clinical governance, audit, and service improvement initiatives
  • Collaborate across multidisciplinary teams and contribute to innovation and research activity

  • Maternal medicine

  • Diabetes and endocrinology
  • Perinatal mental health

The service offers several joint specialist clinics, including epilepsy, haematology, and bariatric pregnancy care, and is one of the few district general hospitals with a Twins Trust-accredited twin clinic and a joint perinatal mental health clinic.

Facilities include:

  • A modern delivery suite
  • Dedicated obstetric theatres
  • A Level 2 neonatal intensive care unit
  • A midwife-led birth centre

Governance structures have recently been refreshed, supported by a cross-site learning and quality forum that promotes continuous improvement.

Working Pattern

  • Contract: Permanent
  • Sessions: Full-time (10 PAs)
  • Working Days: Monday to Thursday
  • On-Call: 1:12 (Friday–Sunday), as per agreed job plan
  • Relocation support available (subject to eligibility)
