Overview

Are you passionate about advancing mental healthcare for older adults? We are looking for a skilled and compassionate Consultant Psychiatrist to join the Older Persons Mental Health inpatient service at Rose Ward, Gosport War Memorial Hospital. You will play a key leadership role within a multidisciplinary team, supporting clinical excellence and innovative care models as part of the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust.

Your Role

As a Consultant Psychiatrist, your responsibilities will include:

Clinical Leadership

  • Provide senior psychiatric leadership and Responsible Clinician duties for patients on Rose Ward (14 beds), and occasional support for Poppy Ward (dementia care).
  • Manage a complex, varied caseload with high standards of risk assessment, treatment planning, and recovery‑oriented practice.
  • Ensure patient care is safe, effective, and evidence‑based.

Team and Service Development

  • Work collaboratively with multidisciplinary team members, community partners, carers, and families to deliver seamless care pathways.
  • Supervise and support Resident and Specialty Doctors, promoting learning and professional growth.
  • Participate in quality improvement initiatives, clinical governance, and service innovation.

Teaching and Scholarship

  • Contribute to weekly academic teaching and broader Continuing Professional Development (CPD).
  • Opportunities available to serve as a Clinical or Educational Supervisor.

On‑Call and Job Planning

  • Participate in a fairly shared on‑call rota across the network.
  • Flexible job planning options available to tailor your role towards education, leadership, or research interests.

Essential Person Specification

Qualifications

To be considered for this role you must have:

Full registration with the General Medical Council (GMC), with a licence to practise in the UK. You can find official registration guidance on the GMC website here: Register with the GMC (UK)

MRCPsych or recognised equivalent

Eligible for inclusion on the GMC Specialist Register (or within six months of anticipated CCT at interview). More about the Specialist Register is available here: GMC Specialist Register Guide

Terms and Benefits

  • Salary: £109,725 – £145,478 per annum (Consultant pay band)
  • Contract: Permanent, Full‑Time
  • Location: Gosport War Memorial Hospital, Bury Road, Gosport, Hampshire, PO12 3PW
  • Professional Support: Protected SPA time (minimum 2.5 SPAs pro rata), CPD access, academic opportunities
  • Incentives: Eligible for a £30,000 Golden Hello payment paid over 2 years.
