Role Summary
An exciting opportunity has opened for a Senior Clinical Fellow in Paediatric Haematology, Oncology and Bone Marrow Transplantation at Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children NHS Foundation Trust in London.
This fellowship forms part of one of the largest paediatric oncology and haematology training programmes in the United Kingdom. The programme is designed for doctors who already have experience in paediatric haematology or oncology and wish to deepen their clinical expertise and advance their careers in this highly specialised field.
During the fellowship, doctors will gain extensive exposure to the management of childhood cancers and complex blood disorders, including bone marrow transplantation and emerging therapies such as CAR-T cell therapy.
The post normally begins August or September and may be extended depending on performance and mutual agreement.
Training and Learning Opportunities
The fellowship combines hands-on clinical practice, academic learning, and research exposure. Fellows will work closely with experienced consultants and multidisciplinary teams, receiving mentorship throughout the programme.
By the end of the placement, fellows are expected to have developed:
- Strong clinical competence in paediatric oncology and haematology
- Experience managing children undergoing bone marrow transplantation
- Understanding of donor selection, conditioning regimens and transplant complications
- Knowledge of the latest developments in paediatric cancer treatment
- Skills in multidisciplinary care and collaborative decision-making
Key Responsibilities
The successful candidate will:
- Provide daily clinical care for children diagnosed with leukaemia, solid tumours, and blood disorders.
- Participate in both inpatient and outpatient services across haematology, oncology and BMT units.
- Work as part of a team of junior and middle-grade doctors delivering round-the-clock care.
Assist with treatment planning and follow-up care for patients receiving chemotherapy or advanced therapies.
Perform procedures such as:
- Bone marrow aspiration
- Trephine biopsy
- Administration of chemotherapy including intrathecal therapy
- Contribute to multidisciplinary team (MDT) meetings and clinical discussions.
- Take part in clinical audits, teaching activities, and research where appropriate.
Within approximately six months, fellows are expected to demonstrate core competencies in the management of paediatric malignant diseases, after which responsibilities may increase based on experience and development plans.

Essential Qualifications
Applicants must have:
- A primary medical degree (MBBS or equivalent).
- Full registration with the General Medical Council (GMC) and licence to practise.
- Postgraduate qualifications such as MRCP, MRCPCH or equivalent.
- At least four years of paediatric experience after registration.
- A minimum of 12 months’ experience in paediatric haematology, oncology or bone marrow transplantation.
For overseas applicants without GMC registration, proof of English language proficiency (such as IELTS with an overall score of 7.5) may be required.
Desirable Qualifications
It would be beneficial to have:
- A postgraduate degree such as MSc or MPhil in a related discipline.
- Published research in peer-reviewed medical journals.
- Experience working in related paediatric specialties.
- Leadership or management experience within clinical settings.
