Job Description
About the Centre
The Max Planck UCL Centre for Computational Psychiatry and Ageing Research (MPC) brings together leading scientists to explore why psychiatric disorders emerge and why people differ in how their cognition develops and changes across the lifespan.
The Centre’s work focuses on uncovering the computational and neural mechanisms that shape brain–behaviour relationships. By applying formal models to behavioural and neural data, MPC research aims to improve early detection of psychiatric illness, refine treatment strategies, and identify ways to support cognitive health into older age.
About the Role
We are seeking a Research Fellow in Computational Psychiatry to join the RELMED project, which investigates how different antidepressant treatments engage distinct reinforcement learning mechanisms in the brain.
This role offers a unique opportunity to work at the cutting edge of computational modelling and neuroimaging. You will co-lead the imaging strand of the project, with a primary focus on electroencephalography (EEG) integrated with advanced computational approaches. Working closely with the Chief Investigator, Professor Quentin Huys, you will help design, implement, and interpret analyses that link brain dynamics to learning processes relevant to depression treatment.
- The role requires regular on-site work at UCL and travel to collaborating study locations when needed.
- Funding is provided by Wellcome for two years in the first instance, with the possibility of extension subject to funding renewal.
Key Responsibilities
- Co-lead EEG data acquisition and analysis within the RELMED project
- Apply and develop computational models of reinforcement learning
- Integrate neurophysiological data with behavioural and clinical measures
- Collaborate closely with clinicians, computational scientists, and statisticians
- Contribute to peer-reviewed publications and conference presentations
- Support the dissemination of findings to academic and clinical audiences
About You
You will be an ambitious and collaborative researcher with a strong quantitative background and a genuine interest in psychiatric neuroscience.
Essential Criteria
- A PhD in computational neuroscience, psychology, cognitive neuroscience, or a related field
- A strong track record of neuroscience research, evidenced by high-quality publications
- Experience in mathematical or computational programming, such as MATLAB, R, Python, or Java
- Excellent communication, problem-solving, and interpersonal skills
- Ability to work independently while contributing effectively within a multidisciplinary team
Salary and Appointment Details
Appointed at UCL Grade 7, with a salary range of £45,103 – £52,586 per annum, inclusive of London Allowance
Applicants who have not yet been formally awarded their PhD will be appointed initially as a Research Assistant (£39,148 – £41,833 per annum), with automatic backdated promotion to Research Fellow upon final thesis submission
Visa and International Applicants
This role meets eligibility criteria for sponsorship under UK Visas and Immigration routes
UCL warmly welcomes applications from international candidates who require visa sponsorship.
