Job Description
About the Role
Somerset NHS Foundation Trust is inviting applications from an enthusiastic and forward-thinking Consultant Obstetrician to join the expanding obstetric team at Musgrove Park Hospital. This is a newly created post designed to strengthen the Trust’s high-risk obstetric service and to support the development of a dedicated elective caesarean section team.
This is a purely obstetric role, with no gynaecology commitments, offering the opportunity to work within a supportive, consultant-led service delivering near-tertiary level care in a district general hospital setting.
The successful candidate will bring a specialist interest in high-risk obstetrics and fetal surveillance, with advanced skills in fetal growth scanning and Doppler assessment for small-for-gestational-age (SGA) and growth-restricted pregnancies.
Clinical Leadership and Specialist Focus
In addition to clinical duties, you will hold a key cross-site leadership role as Obstetric Fetal Monitoring Lead, supporting training, compliance, and continuous improvement across both Musgrove Park Hospital and Yeovil District Hospital.
You will work closely with multidisciplinary colleagues to ensure safe, evidence-based care and to promote excellence in fetal monitoring practice across the Trust.
The Department and Facilities
The Obstetrics and Gynaecology department at Musgrove Park Hospital provides comprehensive maternity care to a diverse population across Somerset. The consultant body includes subspecialist expertise in:
- Maternal medicine
- Fetal medicine
- Diabetes and endocrinology

Facilities include:
- A modern delivery suite
- Dedicated obstetric theatre
- Level 2 neonatal intensive care unit
- Midwife-led birthing centre
The department hosts a cross-site quality and learning forum and has recently strengthened its governance structures to support continuous service improvement.
Key Responsibilities
Your responsibilities will include:
- Providing high-quality obstetric care across inpatient, outpatient, and emergency settings
- Leading obstetric fetal monitoring across both hospital sites, supporting training, audit, and compliance
- Performing fetal growth scans and Doppler assessments for SGA and growth-restricted pregnancies
- Running a weekly ultrasound scan clinic and a fortnightly high-risk antenatal clinic
- Covering elective caesarean section lists and obstetric triage sessions
- Participating in the obstetric-only consultant on-call rota (1:12), including twice-daily consultant-led ward rounds
- Supervising and supporting junior doctors, contributing to teaching, appraisal, and professional development
- Actively engaging in clinical governance, audit, and quality improvement initiatives
- Working collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams and contributing to service innovation and research
- All clinical practice will align with national guidance, including standards set by the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (RCOG)
