Job Description

Overview of the Role

We are seeking a Consultant Psychiatrist to lead clinical care within the Acute Care Team, with primary responsibility for the 6-bed Ministry of Defence (MOD) inpatient unit at Parklands Hospital.

In this role, you will provide expert psychiatric assessment, treatment, and risk management for serving military personnel, as well as NHS patients occupying unfilled MOD beds. Working alongside four consultant colleagues and a multidisciplinary team, you will oversee specialty and junior doctors, ensuring high-quality, recovery-focused, evidence-based care.

The role includes 4.5 Direct Clinical Care PAs and 1.5 Supporting Professional Activities, covering CPD, teaching, and quality improvement. You will also participate in the North and West Hampshire on-call rota (approx. 1:25), with optional first or second on-call responsibilities.

Key Responsibilities

Clinical Leadership & Patient Care

  • Provide expert assessment and treatment for patients with complex psychiatric needs in the MOD inpatient unit.
  • Maintain recovery-focused, evidence-based practice using a biopsychosocial model.
  • Lead the multidisciplinary team, providing supervision and guidance to junior and specialty doctors.
  • Conduct ward reviews, Mental Health Act duties, and care planning for patients on Section 17 leave or in hospital-at-home programs.
  • Engage effectively with carers, families, and allied health professionals to ensure person-centered care.

Risk & Governance

  • Manage complex risk situations and support the team in safe, patient-focused decision-making.
  • Ensure compliance with safeguarding, care planning, and risk management policies.
  • Actively participate in clinical governance, audit, and service development initiatives.
  • Liaise with primary care, AMHTs, and CMHTs to ensure smooth care pathways and proactive resolution of service issues.

Education & Service Development

  • Provide supervision, teaching, and professional support to junior medical staff.
  • Contribute to continuous professional development (CPD) activities.
  • Promote innovation in patient care pathways, service delivery, and MDT working.

Person Specification

Essential Qualifications & Registration

  • Recognised Medical Degree: General Medical Council
  • MRCPsych or equivalent.
  • Full GMC registration with eligibility for Specialist Register inclusion: GMC Specialist Register
  • CCST in General Adult Psychiatry (or within six months of interview).
  • Section 12 Approval under the Mental Health Act: MHA 1983 Section 12
  • Approved Clinician status.

Desirable Qualifications & Experience

  • Experience working with acute and community psychiatric populations.
  • Knowledge of UK hospital systems and mental health legislation.
  • Evidence of CPD engagement and academic contributions.
