Flight Dynamics Engineer – Astroscale UK (Harwell, UK)
Astroscale UK is seeking an experienced and motivated Flight Dynamics Engineer to join our team at our Harwell facility. This is a unique opportunity to be part of a rapidly growing company that is tackling the global issue of orbital debris and contributing to the sustainable use of space.
Astroscale’s Flight Dynamics team is an international group of engineers focused on developing innovative solutions for trajectory planning, optimization, and relative orbit determination. As part of this team, you’ll be involved in the design, development, and operation of Flight Dynamics systems for a variety of orbital environments, including rendezvous, docking, and separation activities with both passive and active clients.
This role offers the chance to work on a diverse range of mission types and collaborate with teams worldwide to deliver cutting-edge technologies that will improve space operations.
Responsibilities:
- Contribute to spacecraft mission design, including requirements derivation, Concept of Operations (ConOps), algorithm development, and interface specifications.
- Perform modelling, simulation, analysis, and optimization for mission design, orbital maneuvers, and orbit estimation.
- Support the development of safe rendezvous capabilities, including the mathematics and software that enable them.
- Develop mathematical models to accurately capture the effects of articulating spacecraft units on attitude and orbit.
- Create state-of-the-art telemetry monitoring and command generation tools for Flight Dynamics.
- Interface with Space Situational Awareness (SSA) providers to ensure safe orbital operations and promote best practices.
- Support real-time spacecraft operations, including maneuver planning, execution, relative orbit estimation, and multi-object orbit determination.
- Assist in critical operations such as Launch and Early Orbit Phase (LEOP), rendezvous, docking, separation, and end-of-life operations.
Essential Skills:
- Bachelor’s degree in Mathematics, Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a relevant scientific discipline.
- Programming experience (Matlab and Python preferred).
- Calm, organized approach to work with the ability to multitask effectively.
Desirable Skills:
- Master’s or Doctorate in a relevant field.
- Experience in spacecraft flight operations.
- Proficiency with Linux and scripting.
- Experience in regression testing and version control.
- Knowledge of Mission Analysis, image processing, filtering methods, or Guidance, Navigation, and Control.
