Job Description

RGU Digital Innovation Lab
The RGU Digital Innovation Lab pioneers the use of immersive and visualization technologies to transform decision-making for businesses, organizations, and the public regarding the natural and built environment. By providing a unified platform grounded in a single, reliable source of information, the Lab eliminates the confusion of multiple data interpretations. Drawing on advanced technologies and interdisciplinary expertise in computing, data science, architecture, design, engineering, and business insight, it places “people in the picture.” From inward investors and property developers to environmentalists, council planners, and local residents, users can explore buildings, infrastructure, spaces, and landscapes with millimetre precision. The Lab aspires to encompass the North East of Scotland in its scope.

Developed with backing from the Scottish Government’s Just Transition Fund, the Lab aligns with the University’s response to the National Strategy for Economic Transformation and its commitment to net-zero goals. Renowned for its strong ties with industry and the public sector, RGU sees the Digital Innovation Lab as a prime opportunity to deepen these partnerships.

We are seeking a dynamic, driven individual to lead the Lab’s growth by spearheading new products, services, research, teaching, partnerships, and commercial ventures. This role offers a unique chance to take charge of a cutting-edge initiative with immense potential, engaging externally with businesses, public sector bodies, and communities while collaborating internally with RGU’s Schools and Departments.

The ideal candidate will bring a rare blend of skills: the vision to build a thriving, sustainable operation and the practical ability to manage it. This includes forging strong industry connections, elevating the Lab’s profile, optimizing returns—both in impact and revenue—and securing additional funding. Coordinating the Lab’s activities demands proven expertise in influence, negotiation, team leadership, and mentoring. While experience with visualization technologies or the planning/development of built and natural environments is a plus, it’s not required. What’s essential is a relentless passion to make this venture succeed. In return, you’ll join a vibrant team and tap into the broader RGU network from day one.

Sponsorship for this role is limited by UKVI rules and is available only to candidates currently in the UK on a Skilled Worker visa (with a Certificate of Sponsorship issued before 4 April 2024), those with a relevant PhD, or ‘new entrants’ under 26 who are students or recent graduates.

This is an 18-month fixed-term position. Reflecting RGU’s focus on work-life balance, you’ll enjoy hybrid working options, a generous pension scheme, 46 days of annual leave (including public holidays), access to an onsite nursery and sports centre, and a variety of voluntary health and travel benefits.

We are dedicated to building a diverse workforce and cultivating an inclusive culture where everyone feels valued, free to share ideas, and empowered to thrive. Learn more at our Diverse Workforce pages.

To apply, submit your CV and a cover letter outlining how your skills and experience match the role’s requirements as detailed in the person specification.
