Koala Ward at Great Ormond Street Hospital is recruiting a Senior Staff Nurse to join our dedicated, innovative team. This is a fantastic opportunity to deliver outstanding, family-focused care to children and young people with complex neurological and neurosurgical conditions, including brain and spinal issues, epilepsy, craniofacial needs, and more.

As a key member of the team, you’ll provide strong clinical leadership, coordinate care on our busy 24-bed ward, and help guide and inspire junior nurses while maintaining the highest standards even during challenging shifts.

  • Brings solid experience from an acute or critical care setting, preferably in neurosciences or a closely related field.
  • Has strong leadership qualities  you’re comfortable supervising, motivating, and developing a team.
  • Excels in fast-paced, high-pressure situations while keeping patient safety and quality at the forefront.
  • Is confident in independent clinical decision-making, escalating issues appropriately, and managing complex cases.
  • Is passionate about personal growth, evidence-based practice, and contributing to service improvements.
  • Has excellent communication, organisational, and interpersonal skills to build strong relationships with children, families, and colleagues.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead a designated group of nurses to deliver safe, high-quality care tailored to children, young people, and their families.
  • Serve as a positive role model and expert practitioner in specialist paediatric neurosciences nursing.
  • Support the smooth, efficient running of the ward within available resources.
  • Champion ongoing improvements in patient care through research, evidence-based approaches, and innovation.
  • Step up to manage the department when the Ward Manager or Team Leader is absent.
  • Embrace and apply the principles of Compassion in Practice – the NHS vision for outstanding, caring nursing (more details available in the original document from NHS England).

Essential Qualifications and Experience

Registered Nurse with the NMC (relevant to paediatrics or the specialty).

Relevant post-registration nursing qualifications.

Clear evidence of ongoing professional development and competencies.

Experience caring for acutely or chronically ill children (or transferable acute care skills).

Solid understanding of children’s nursing issues, safeguarding, clinical governance, and revalidation requirements.

Basic IT skills and appreciation of research/evidence-based practice.

Desirable

  • Assessor or practice supervisor qualification.
  • Prior experience in neurosciences (ideally NHS).
  • Knowledge of incident reporting, complaints handling, or innovation in nursing.

Skills and Attributes

  • Strong ability to plan, prioritise, and deliver family-centred care.
  • Excellent communication (verbal and written), numeracy, time management, and teaching abilities.
  • Comfortable working collaboratively in a team or independently.
  • Skilled at delegating appropriately and showing true compassion in action.

Desirable skills include IV drug administration and central venous access management.
