About the Role
The School of Engineering is seeking to appoint a skilled Technician to support ongoing research activities, particularly involving the manufacture, assembly, and commissioning of a large research facility. This is a hands-on role that will contribute directly to the development and operation of a significant piece of experimental equipment.
Working with a high degree of independence, you will be responsible for producing complex components from a variety of materials, as well as designing and fabricating specialist jigs and fixtures.
About You
To be successful in this role, you will need:
- A recognised apprenticeship in Toolmaking or Precision Machining
- A BTEC Higher National Certificate (or equivalent qualification) in a relevant discipline
- Extensive experience in operating both conventional and CNC machining tools
- Strong knowledge of CNC programming, ideally with experience in modern offline CAM programming
- The ability to work independently and accurately from engineering drawings
- Proven experience manufacturing components to tight tolerances in a research or toolroom environment
Key Responsibilities
- Manufacture and assemble mechanical components for a large-scale research project
- Design and produce custom jigs and fixtures
- Support the commissioning and operation of the research test facility
- Collaborate with researchers and engineers to meet project objectives
