Are you a highly organised, hands-on lab leader with a passion for infection biology? The University of Glasgow is looking for an experienced Laboratory Manager to join Professor Rick Maizels’ research team in the School of Infection & Immunity. This role is part of a prestigious Wellcome Trust-funded international collaboration with partners across the UK, Netherlands, and USA.

At the heart of this research is a focus on helminth parasite-derived cytokine mimics, requiring expertise in molecular biology, cell culture, protein analysis, and animal models. You’ll play a key role in both managing lab operations and contributing to cutting-edge research in molecular and cellular infection biology. Learn more about the lab at maizelslab.org.

What You’ll Do:

  • Lead daily operations of the lab, ensuring smooth running, safety, and compliance
  • Oversee production and maintenance of parasite life cycles both in-lab and in the animal unit
  • Contribute to research planning and delivery, supporting ongoing experiments and developing new methods
  • Liaise with international collaborators, managing meetings, materials, and shared data
  • Provide expert training and mentorship to students and researchers
  • Handle purchasing, budgets, grant monitoring, and regulatory documentation
  • Contribute to publications, present findings, and help drive the lab’s global reputation
  • Support outreach, recruitment, and university-wide initiatives

About You:

We’re looking for someone who brings both technical depth and a collaborative spirit. You’ll be the go-to person for lab matters and a vital scientific contributor.

You’ll need to have:

  • A degree (SCQF level 9 or equivalent) in Immunology, Microbiology, Parasitology, or Virology
  • In-depth knowledge of mouse models of infection and a Home Office Personal Licence
  • Hands-on expertise in protein expression, purification, molecular cloning, and cell culture
  • Strong leadership, people management, and financial oversight skills
  • Experience with research compliance, including health and safety, animal welfare, and data reporting
  • Excellent communication, organisation, and problem-solving abilities

It’s a plus if you also have:

  • Skills in RNA-seq, arrays, or bioinformatics
  • Familiarity with protein labeling or antibody-based techniques
  • Experience with grant applications or international research collaboration
