About the Position

The University of Sussex is looking for an experienced Senior Mental Health Nurse to join its Wellbeing Services team and provide specialist mental health support to students.

This is a senior clinical role involving the assessment and management of students experiencing complex or urgent mental health difficulties. You will carry out mental health, risk and capacity assessments, coordinate appropriate support, and work closely with NHS services and other statutory organisations to ensure students receive suitable care.

You will also contribute specialist mental health expertise across the University, helping colleagues respond appropriately to students who may require additional support.

Key Responsibilities

Your duties will include:

– Completing urgent mental health, risk and capacity assessments where required.
– Participating in daily triage and responding to situations involving students in crisis.
– Developing, coordinating and reviewing care plans for students with complex mental health needs.
– Maintaining appropriate contact and follow-up with students in line with their individual circumstances.
– Working closely with NHS primary and secondary mental health services and other statutory agencies.
– Acting as an effective link between University wellbeing services and external healthcare providers at case level.
– Providing specialist advice to University colleagues on mental health matters.
– Delivering training and guidance on appropriate mental health interventions.
– Visiting students on campus alongside relevant University colleagues when circumstances require.
– Attending case and crisis meetings within the Student Experience Division and taking the chair when necessary.
– Contributing to a collaborative and responsive approach to student wellbeing across the University.

What We Are Looking For

We are seeking a confident and motivated mental health professional who can combine sound clinical judgement with excellent communication and organisational skills.

You will need to be a registered mental health nurse with relevant post-qualification mental health training and at least five years of post-qualifying experience. Experience in hospital or community-based urgent care environments, such as A&E liaison or a comparable service, would be particularly relevant.
