Aston University’s Department of Design Technology & Innovation is seeking a dynamic and forward-thinking academic to join its growing team. Recently established within the College of Engineering and Physical Sciences, the department serves as a creative hub that blends design innovation with engineering excellence. It also works in close collaboration with Design Factory Birmingham, a member of the Global Design Factory Network.
About the Role
We are looking to appoint a highly motivated and innovative Lecturer or Senior Lecturer who is passionate about advancing design education and research. You will play a key role in inspiring students, developing their creativity, and enhancing their practical problem-solving capabilities. You’ll also work collaboratively with cross-disciplinary teams of engineers and designers to simulate real-world challenges and prepare students for professional success.
Key Responsibilities
The successful candidate will:
Design and Deliver Innovative Curriculum: Create and teach up-to-date, industry-aligned course content that reflects current practices and future trends in design and innovation.
Secure Research and Enterprise Funding: Lead and contribute to securing external funding for research and enterprise initiatives.
Enhance Industry Collaboration: Build strong partnerships with the design industry to enrich student learning through exposure to real-world projects and opportunities.
Develop New Programmes: Contribute to the creation of new academic programmes aligned with the Aston 2030 strategy.
Lead Teaching Activities: Deliver and potentially coordinate undergraduate and postgraduate modules in industrial and product design, depending on your expertise and experience.
Facilities and Support
You will have access to a dedicated design studio, fully equipped workshops, and a range of 3D printing and prototyping facilities. You will also play an active role in shaping the future development of Design Factory Birmingham.
Candidate Profile
We are particularly interested in candidates with a strong background in Product or Industrial Design who can contribute to one or more of the following teaching areas:
- Design Practice
- Design Thinking and Innovation
- AI in Design
- Design for Manufacture
- Responsible and Sustainable Design
