About the Public Affairs Directorate

The Public Affairs and Communications Directorate (PAD) is responsible for Oxford’s institutional communications, reputation management, and public engagement. It comprises six expert teams:

  • News and Information
  • Research and Innovation Communications
  • Campaigns and Digital Communications
  • Brand and Design
  • Events
  • Public Affairs

PAD works closely with University leadership and partners across departments, GLAM (Gardens, Libraries and Museums), Colleges, and central services. It supports internal communications, manages reputation, and leads external campaigns that enhance Oxford’s global profile.

About the Role

This senior position offers a rare opportunity to lead some of the most impactful communications projects in higher education. As Deputy Head, you will:

  • Develop and implement media strategies for major announcements, partnerships, and institutional campaigns
  • Secure high-impact coverage across global media platforms
  • Shape Oxford’s public stance on critical issues within UK and international higher education
  • Advise the Vice-Chancellor and senior leaders on media handling and strategic communications
  • Manage sensitive and time-critical media enquiries and crises
  • Produce and distribute news releases, statements, and communication strategies
  • Foster internal and external relationships to support coherent messaging across the institution

This is a high-responsibility role requiring excellent editorial judgement, strategic thinking, and a deep understanding of media landscapes. It involves both proactive storytelling and responsive communications within a demanding and high-profile environment.

About You

We are seeking candidates who can demonstrate:

  • Extensive experience in communications or journalism at national or institutional level
  • Proven success in developing and delivering strategic communications plans
  • Excellent writing, editing, and storytelling skills with attention to detail
  • Confidence advising senior leaders and handling high-pressure situations
  • Strong digital media skills, including content creation and performance tracking
  • Familiarity with AI tools used in modern communications (e.g., content generation, media monitoring)
  • Strong organisational skills and the ability to manage multiple priorities
  • Experience using analytics and feedback to measure communication impact

This role meets the criteria for sponsorship under the Skilled Worker visa route. The University of Oxford will cover the cost of the Skilled Worker visa and the NHS surcharge for eligible candidates.
