Job Description

Join Us at Edinburgh Napier University – Scotland’s #1 Modern University

We’re at a pivotal and exciting stage within the Information Services (IS) department – one of the University’s largest professional services. Responsible for delivering vital technology, application, and library services, the department is undergoing transformational change, modernising to meet the evolving needs of our students, staff, and the broader digital landscape.

About the Security Team

Our Security Team plays a crucial role in protecting the University’s people, data, and systems from cyber threats. Through a combination of cutting-edge technology, robust processes and policies, and strong collaboration with teams across the University, we work to ensure a safe and secure environment for teaching, research, and operations.

The Role: Senior Information Security Analyst

As a Senior Information Security Analyst, you’ll bring your expertise in defensive security to lead core operational activities. Your role will span everything from enhancing security controls and managing tools, to investigating incidents and supporting continuous improvements. You’ll work closely with our external Managed Detection and Response (MDR) partner, respond to issues, and help shape the future of our cyber security posture.

You’ll also have the opportunity to grow professionally—developing your own skillset while mentoring others and promoting good practice across the University.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and manage operational activities across our security systems, including configuration changes, upgrades, and peer review of work done by other team members.
  • Engage with our MDR partner during incident response, investigations, and vulnerability assessments. Some work may fall outside standard hours depending on incident severity.
  • Represent the security team in meetings, project reviews, and procurement evaluations—providing expert advice on security risks and mitigation.
  • Manage and deliver Information Services projects, including planning, resourcing, and documentation. Project management training and mentorship will be provided.
  • Stay informed and engaged with developments in cyber security—attend industry events, gain certifications, and explore specialist areas of interest.

What We’re Looking For

  • Experience with Microsoft 365, Azure, Cisco, and VMware security tools.
  • Strong understanding of networking concepts (e.g. IP addressing, DHCP, DNS, HTTP, TLS, VPN).
  • Solid knowledge of operating systems and application access control.
  • Excellent attention to detail and precise record-keeping.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Well-organised with the ability to work independently.
  • Proactive learner who shares knowledge and seeks support when needed.
