Service: Children’s Social Work

Leeds City Council is seeking a passionate and experienced Senior Social Worker to join our dynamic Children’s Social Work team. This role is perfect for professionals with a deep commitment to restorative practice, who are dedicated to fostering positive change and achieving sustainable outcomes for children and families.

About the Role:
At the core of our work is our restorative practice model, which prioritizes strong, collaborative relationships with children, young people, and their families. We believe in working alongside individuals, rather than for them, to create lasting, meaningful change.

As a Senior Social Worker, you will oversee a complex and varied caseload, providing leadership and expertise in statutory social work. Your responsibilities will include assessing and managing risks, ensuring the delivery of high-quality, child-centered services, and contributing to the development of innovative solutions to meet the needs of children and families. You will be expected to supervise and mentor less experienced social workers, providing guidance and support to develop their skills and practice.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Manage a diverse caseload with a focus on the needs and welfare of children, families, and carers.
  • Lead assessments, manage risks, and devise care plans that ensure the safety and wellbeing of children.
  • Work closely with partner agencies, including health and third-sector organizations, to deliver integrated care.
  • Supervise and support junior staff and social work students, promoting professional development.
  • Lead multi-agency meetings and provide clear, concise reports for court proceedings when necessary.
  • Promote a restorative approach to family engagement and decision-making, including family group conferencing.
  • Engage in reflective supervision and ongoing professional development, contributing to the ongoing improvement of the service.

About You:
We are looking for an experienced, qualified social worker with a strong background in managing complex cases within a statutory setting. You should have a passion for restorative practice, with the ability to build effective relationships with children, young people, and families. The ideal candidate will demonstrate leadership qualities, a proactive approach to reflective practice, and a commitment to continuous professional growth.

Essential Criteria:

  • A recognised social work qualification (e.g., BA, BSc, MA, DipSW, CQSW) and registration with Social Work England.
  • Experience managing complex, high-risk cases in a statutory environment.
  • Practice Educator Level 1 qualification (or willingness to undertake Level 2).
  • In-depth knowledge of safeguarding, relevant legislation, and best practices in children’s services.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to engage positively with children, families, and professionals.
  • Proven experience in leading and mentoring colleagues and students.
  • Ability to work effectively within a multi-agency environment and to manage conflict and negotiate solutions.

We Offer:

  • A competitive salary with generous holiday entitlement.
  • Membership of the West Yorkshire Pension Fund, with employer contributions.
  • Flexible working options, including hybrid and part-time arrangements, to help you maintain a healthy work-life balance.
  • Clear career progression pathways and ongoing professional development opportunities.
  • Access to a variety of staff benefits, including discounts and a blue light card.
  • Essential car user allowance and access to a car loan scheme.
