Job Description

We are excited to offer this rewarding permanent Consultant in Older Persons Mental Health position within our inpatient services at Gosport War Memorial Hospital.

As the Consultant, you’ll deliver expert clinical care, act as Responsible Clinician (RC), and provide treatment to older adults admitted to our wards with a primary focus on one ward (such as Rose Ward) while supporting care across the unit as needed. You’ll also take on a key leadership role, guiding and inspiring the multidisciplinary team to deliver outstanding patient-centered care.

You’ll join a collaborative Older Persons Mental Health (OPMH) inpatient team at Gosport War Memorial Hospital. The team includes a part-time consultant colleague, three Resident Doctors, and a middle-grade doctor, creating a supportive environment where you can thrive and make a real difference.

Key Responsibilities

We look to our Consultants to play an active part in every aspect of clinical governance and to contribute thoughtfully to service planning, improvement initiatives, and broader service developments. This includes engaging in local academic meetings, teaching, and training opportunities.

In your day-to-day leadership you will:

  • Collaborate closely with senior clinical colleagues to clarify the professional roles, expertise, and responsibilities of every team member — and ensure clear accountability for each element of patient care.
  • Support the team in understanding individual and shared goals, while fostering a strong culture of safety, openness, and honest discussion of challenges or incidents.
  • Maintain excellent communication within the team and with external colleagues, making sure important information flows quickly and reliably.
  • Create space for all team members to share their views in discussions and help everyone feel ownership of agreed decisions.
  • Promote effective cooperation, mutual respect, and clear communication among colleagues at all levels.

Essential Qualifications & Requirements

  • Full registration with the General Medical Council (GMC)
  • MRCPsych (or equivalent recognised qualification)
  • Eligible for entry onto the Specialist Register (or within 6 months of CCT at interview) — CCT in Old Age Psychiatry / Older Persons Psychiatry
  • Section 12(2) approved under the Mental Health Act 1983

This role requires an enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check.
