Job Description

We are thrilled to offer an exciting opportunity to join the ENT team at East Kent Hospitals University NHS Foundation Trust as an ST1-ST2 Trust Doctor. Our department is made up of 11 ENT consultants, covering a wide range of ENT specialties, and we are proud to be the only recognised head and neck cancer centre in Kent. As the department and trust expand in line with the new Kent and Medway Medical School, we are looking for passionate individuals to join our team.

The main ENT department, which includes a specialist ward, inpatient and outpatient services, emergency care, and the head & neck centre, is based at the William Harvey Hospital in Ashford. Kent and Canterbury Hospital (KCH) offers a variety of outpatient clinics, day surgery, 23-hour surgery, and robotic head and neck surgery. We also provide a clinic at the Queen Elizabeth Queen Mother (QEQM) Hospital in Margate.

As an ST1-ST2 Trust Doctor, you will play an important role within the ENT team at William Harvey Hospital. You will be well-supported by our middle-grade doctors, specialist nurse practitioners, and on-call consultants. Your responsibilities will include on-call duties (ENT during the day and Maxillofacial cross-cover at night), managing acute emergencies, and handling referrals to the department. You will also be expected to manage the ward and participate in the ENT emergency clinic, which runs every morning. Throughout, you will receive direct supervision and support from middle-grade doctors and on-call consultants. There will be plenty of opportunities for you to attend theatres and outpatient clinics, enabling you to further develop your knowledge and skills in ENT. Feedback from trainees at both ST1 and registrar levels has been consistently outstanding.

The role offers a fantastic opportunity for those interested in pursuing a career in ENT to develop their clinical expertise and prepare for future roles or training positions.

On-call responsibilities involve handling calls from A&E, GPs, minor injury centres, and ward referrals, including those from KCH and QEQM. You will be expected to triage these referrals, determining whether immediate review and management are needed. You will then arrange and perform the necessary actions, organizing ongoing care or escalating when required. Alternatively, patients can be booked into the emergency clinic or have on-site reviews coordinated with other team members across the trust.

East Kent Hospitals is one of the largest hospital trusts in England, serving a population of around 800,000 across five hospitals and community clinics. Our vision is to provide ‘great healthcare from great people,’ and our values guide everything we do: ‘People feel cared for, safe, respected, and confident that we are making a difference.’ At East Kent Hospitals, we embrace a new way of working called ‘We care,’ which empowers our frontline staff to lead improvements every day. We’re seeking compassionate individuals to join us on our journey to provide the best care for our patients, families, and carers.

Please note: If you require a Certificate of Sponsorship to work in the UK, you must indicate this on your application form, even if you currently hold a sponsorship or work permit for another role. We are only able to sponsor candidates applying for roles at Band 5 and above on a Skilled Worker Visa.
