Job Description

Riverside School is an Outstanding-rated secondary free school (rated Outstanding by Ofsted in all areas, including the sixth form) located on the north bank of the Thames in Barking, East London. Since opening in 2013, we’ve grown rapidly and now serve over 1,500 students across Years 7 to 13, with plans to expand to around 2,000 in the coming years as our thriving sixth form continues to develop. We’re part of a dynamic community committed to delivering excellence for every student.

Joining us as a Teacher of Geography means becoming part of a forward-thinking school where teaching and learning sit at the heart of everything we do. We invest heavily in our staff through personalized weekly coaching, regular lesson study groups, and dedicated planning time, helping teachers grow into confident, high-performing professionals. Our collaborative culture fosters real passion and drive—from both students and colleagues—creating an inspiring environment to teach and develop your career.

Our impressive results speak for themselves: a validated Progress 8 score of +0.92 places us in the top 4% nationally across all student groups, including disadvantaged pupils and those with low, middle, or high prior attainment. We achieved a strong Ebacc entry rate of 61% (far above the national average) and an Attainment 8 score of 55.5, reflecting our consistent focus on academic rigor and social mobility.

The Geography department is a close-knit, energetic team of five dedicated teachers who work together closely to deliver engaging, high-quality lessons across all key stages. We’re now seeking an enthusiastic and innovative Geography teacher with strong subject expertise to join us.

What we’re looking for in you:

  • A genuine enthusiasm for Geography that shines through in your teaching every day
  • Proven (or clear potential for) outstanding classroom practice
  • A proactive, committed approach to contributing to our innovative department
  • Willingness to support intervention sessions, enrichment activities, and after-school clubs
  • An active role in wider school life
  • A reflective mindset, always eager to refine and develop your teaching
  • A real desire to positively impact the futures of young people from all backgrounds

In return, we offer:

  • A supportive, collaborative team environment where ideas are shared openly and colleagues lift each other up
  • Scope to pioneer creative teaching approaches that drive exceptional student outcomes
  • Regular lesson study opportunities for joint planning and in-depth exploration of effective pedagogy
  • Strong career progression prospects as our school continues to grow
  • Extensive professional development to build both your classroom expertise and leadership potential
  • Modern, purpose-built classrooms equipped to a high standard in our impressive £45 million facility

If you’re driven by a shared vision of excellence for all students and want to thrive in a high-achieving, supportive setting, we’d love to hear from you.
