About the Department
UCL is globally recognised for excellence in biomedical sciences and translational medicine. The successful candidate will join Professor Ehrenstein’s translational research group, which bridges laboratory research with early-phase clinical trials in autoimmune rheumatic diseases.
The group collaborates closely with UCLH, a world-leading centre for systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) research and patient care. This partnership ensures seamless integration of science and clinical practice, allowing patients to be recruited into both observational and interventional trials.
Key team members include:
- Dr Muhammad Shipa, Principal Investigator and Consultant Rheumatologist
- Research nurses, trial coordinators, and lupus consultants providing multi-disciplinary expertise
- This structure offers an unparalleled environment to gain experience across basic science, translational research, and clinical trials.
About the Role
The STRATIFY-LUPUS trial is the first biomarker-enrichment trial for SLE patients, funded by Arthritis UK and NIHR EME, with recruitment starting May 2026.
Patients eligible for B cell depletion and positive for the serum biomarker IgA2 anti-DNA antibodies will be randomised to either:
- Rituximab alone, or
- Rituximab followed by Belimumab
The post-holder will:
- Lead clinical aspects of trial conduct, focusing on patient recruitment at UCLH
- Liaise with local hospitals to increase referrals for eligible participants
- Collaborate with the UCL Clinical Trial Unit, including trial managers, statisticians, and data managers
- Integrate clinical trial processes with laboratory analyses
- Gain hands-on experience in lupus clinical trials and laboratory research
- Contribute to publications and PhD fellowship applications (if desired)
- Access funding to attend national and international conferences
Flexible arrangements:
- 50% clinical fellow + 50% educational role at UCLH (funding pending)
- Possibility to combine with another UCL/UCLH-funded position
- Eligible for sponsorship and Out-of-Programme Research (OOPR)
Candidate Profile
We are seeking a highly motivated medically qualified clinical fellow (maximum ST4 grade limited by funding) with:
- Medical degree (MBBS or equivalent)
- Active or planned enrollment in a rheumatology training program
- Full GMC registration
- Membership of the Royal College of Physicians
- Completed General Professional Training (or equivalent)
- Experience in rheumatology outpatient clinics and inpatient care for SLE patients
Desirable but not essential:
- Knowledge of clinical trial processes
- Laboratory experience
- The ideal candidate is proactive, detail-oriented, and eager to engage in multidisciplinary translational research.
