About the Role and Our Unit

Join our dynamic Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU), also known as Seahorse Ward, a 17-bed specialist facility caring for critically ill children from newborn babies right up to 18 years old. As a leading tertiary centre, we manage the most complex Level 3 and High Dependency cases across specialties like neurology, metabolic disorders, oncology, respiratory conditions, genetics, and post-operative recovery.

Children come to us through dedicated paediatric retrieval teams, from ward emergencies, or straight after major surgery. As the regional hub for metabolic and neurosurgery in North Thames, we regularly look after some of the sickest and most challenging young patients – making every shift both demanding and incredibly meaningful.

This is a fantastic chance to build specialist critical care expertise in a world-class children’s hospital. New team members benefit from a comprehensive foundation programme, including nine dedicated study days focused on essentials like respiratory, cardiac, and neurological care. You’ll join a friendly, close-knit team of more than 120 professionals who genuinely look out for one another, prioritise wellbeing, and are passionate about outstanding family-centred care.

Important note: This position is not suitable for newly qualified nurses. If you’ve applied in the last three months, please hold off reapplying at this time.

Who We’re Looking For – Essential Requirements

To join us, you must hold current registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) (www.nmc.org.uk) and bring at least 12 months of relevant post-registration experience. We welcome applications from:

  • NMC-registered Children’s Nurses
  • NMC-registered Adult Nurses with recent experience in ICU, Emergency Department (A&E/ED), or a paediatric setting
  • Internationally educated nurses (IENs) with an active NMC PIN and at least 12 months of UK-registered nursing experience in a relevant field

Your day-to-day will involve delivering exceptional, compassionate nursing care to children, young people, and their families. You’ll assess needs, plan and deliver individualised care, evaluate outcomes, and guide junior staff. Creating a warm, safe, and welcoming space is key, as is acting as a strong advocate  sharing clear information, offering emotional support, and signposting to helpful resources during tough times.

Effective communication is vital: you’ll handle sensitive or complex discussions, break through barriers, and support families through difficult moments. From the moment of admission, you’ll think ahead about discharge, collaborating with the wider multidisciplinary team, other hospital departments, and community services.
