Key Responsibilities

In this Band 5 Neonatal Staff Nurse role, you’ll deliver specialist care while working closely with families and colleagues. Your daily contributions will include:

  • Providing compassionate, evidence-based nursing care to sick and premature babies, including ongoing assessment, planning, implementation, and review of individualized care plans.
  • Building trusting partnerships with parents and families—delivering education, emotional support, and practical guidance on caring for their baby.
  • Collaborating effectively with the wider team, including doctors, midwives, therapists, and regional neonatal networks, while maintaining clear and sensitive communication.
  • Safely operating and maintaining specialized neonatal equipment, promptly reporting issues and ensuring alternatives are in place.
  • Mentoring and supervising junior colleagues, nursing associates, and students through hands-on teaching and clinical support.
  • Ensuring precise, up-to-date documentation in accordance with Trust policies and Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) standards.
  • Upholding strict infection prevention, health and safety protocols, and contributing to safeguarding processes for infants and families.
  • Participating in emergency situations, such as neonatal resuscitation and delivery attendance (following appropriate training like Qualified in Specialty (QIS) andNewborn and Infant Life Support (NALS)).
  • Assisting families in preparing for discharge, including teaching essential skills and coordinating follow-up care.
  • Engaging in service evaluation, audits, and quality improvement initiatives to enhance neonatal care.

What We’re Looking For

Essential Qualifications
  • Registered Nurse on Part 1, 7, or 10 of the NMC register.
Desirable Experience
  • Prior work with infants, newborns, or families in a clinical setting.
Key Knowledge and Skills
  • Up-to-date understanding of evidence-based neonatal nursing practices.
  • Familiarity with NHS policies on clinical governance, infection control, risk management, safeguarding children, data protection, and more.

This position requires a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check.
