Job Description

Role overview

An exciting opportunity is available for an experienced registered nurse to join the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) at Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children NHS Foundation Trust — one of the UK’s leading specialist children’s hospitals. The 17-bed tertiary PICU cares for critically ill infants, children, and young people up to age 18 across complex specialties including neurology, metabolic medicine, oncology, respiratory care, genetics, and post-operative recovery.

This environment offers exposure to some of the most clinically complex paediatric cases in the region, including referrals via specialist transport services. Nurses joining the unit receive structured development through a foundation programme with focused study days in respiratory, cardiac, and neurological critical care — supporting the transition into high-acuity paediatric nursing.

What you’ll be doing

  • Delivering high-quality, family-centred nursing care to critically ill children
  • Assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating individualised care plans
  • Supporting families through complex and emotionally demanding situations
  • Acting as an advocate for children and young people
  • Communicating sensitive clinical information clearly and compassionately
  • Working with multidisciplinary teams to coordinate safe discharge planning
  • Supervising and supporting colleagues when appropriate

  • Demonstrated ability to care for acutely or chronically unwell children (or transferable critical care skills)
  • Strong communication, prioritisation, and teamwork skills
  • Commitment to safeguarding, evidence-based care, and clinical governance
  • Compassionate, family-centred approach to practice
  • Internationally educated nurses must hold an active UK NMC PIN.
