About the Role

An opportunity has arisen for a Band 5 Registered Nurse to join the Surgical Day Bed Unit (SDBU) within the Day Surgery Theatre Complex at Vale of Leven Hospital.

This unit supports patients undergoing same-day surgical procedures, ensuring safe admission, treatment, and discharge. The service includes:

  • A patient admission and discharge suite
  • A day surgery theatre complex
  • An endoscopy service

The successful candidate will work as part of a well-established multidisciplinary team, delivering high-quality patient-centred care. While experience in a surgical day unit or theatre environment is helpful, it is not essential, as structured training and education support will be provided by the department’s dedicated learning team.

Key Responsibilities

Patient Care

  • Assess individual patient needs and develop person-centred care plans.
  • Deliver and evaluate evidence-based nursing care throughout the patient journey.
  • Ensure patients and their families are involved in care planning and decision-making.
  • Provide guidance that enables patients to take an active role in managing their health and recovery.

Clinical Practice

  • Maintain accurate and confidential patient records in accordance with professional standards set by the Nursing and Midwifery Council.
  • Practice safely within legal, ethical, and professional nursing frameworks.
  • Deliver care that respects cultural, social, and individual patient needs.

Team Collaboration

  • Work effectively with multidisciplinary teams including theatre staff, surgeons, and healthcare support workers.
  • Support learning opportunities for student nurses and healthcare assistants.
  • Participate in clinical supervision, appraisals, and ongoing professional development.

Professional Development

  • Engage in continuing professional development activities.
  • Contribute to a positive learning environment aligned with national healthcare education standards.

Working Environment

The Surgical Day Bed Unit operates Monday to Friday, providing care for patients undergoing same-day surgical procedures. Nurses rotate across different areas of the service, supporting both clinical treatment and patient preparation and recovery.

The unit is supported by an experienced education team, ensuring new staff members receive the guidance needed to develop their skills within the surgical environment.
