Role Overview
This is an excellent opportunity for a Registered Mental Health Nurse or newly qualified nurse to join a supportive inpatient team dedicated to delivering high-quality mental health care.
The ward is committed to creating a compassionate and therapeutic environment where patients receive person-centred support throughout their recovery journey. Nurses are given the time, training, and professional support needed to deliver meaningful care and develop their careers.
Applications are also welcomed from student nurses who expect to complete their registration within the next three months. A structured preceptorship programme and ongoing training will be provided to help newly qualified staff gain confidence and clinical expertise.
About the Ward
Tunstall Ward is an acute inpatient unit supporting working-age female adults experiencing mental health difficulties. The ward provides assessment, treatment, and stabilisation in a safe and therapeutic environment.
The multidisciplinary team (MDT) includes professionals from:
- Psychiatry and medical services
- Clinical psychology
- Occupational therapy
- Physiotherapy
- Speech and language therapy
- Dietetics
- Physical healthcare teams
Daily MDT meetings ensure coordinated care, regular patient review, and effective discharge planning.
Key Responsibilities
Patient Care and Clinical Practice
- Deliver safe, compassionate, and evidence-based nursing care.
- Carry out clinical assessments and contribute to personalised care plans.
- Act as a named nurse responsible for coordinating patient care.
- Provide therapeutic interventions aimed at supporting recovery and wellbeing.
- Ensure patients’ dignity, safety, and privacy are respected at all times.
Risk Management and Safeguarding
- Conduct risk assessments and respond appropriately to changes in patient condition.
- Identify potential safeguarding concerns and escalate where necessary.
- Work within legal frameworks including the Mental Health Act and Mental Capacity Act.
Medication Management
- Administer medication safely in accordance with professional guidelines.
- Ensure proper storage and documentation of medicines, including injectable treatments.
Teamwork and Leadership
- Work collaboratively with the multidisciplinary team to deliver holistic care.
- Support and mentor student nurses during clinical placements.
- Contribute to the daily operational running of the ward.
Professional Standards
- Maintain high standards of clinical practice and professionalism.
- Represent mental health services and the Trust positively within the healthcare system and community.

Person Requirements
Essential Qualifications
Current registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council as:
- Registered Mental Health Nurse (RMN), or
- Registered Learning Disability Nurse (RNLD)
- Evidence of continuing professional development
- Willingness to undertake training as a practice assessor or mentor
Essential Experience
- Experience supporting individuals with mental health conditions or learning disabilities
- Working in person-centred therapeutic environments
- Collaboration with patients, families, and multidisciplinary teams
- Partnership working with other health and social care services
Knowledge and Skills
Applicants should demonstrate knowledge of:
- Evidence-based mental health care practices
- Relevant legislation such as the Mental Health Act and Mental Capacity Act
- Safeguarding procedures in healthcare settings
- Clinical risk assessment and management
- Medicines administration and clinical governance standards
- Strong communication skills and the ability to work effectively under pressure are also essential.
