About the Role
Tees Esk and Wear Valleys NHS Foundation Trust is inviting applications from Registered Nurses and Newly Qualified Nurses who are passionate about supporting individuals experiencing mental health challenges.
This role offers an excellent opportunity to develop your clinical career within a supportive inpatient setting. If you are a student nurse due to register within the next three months, you are also encouraged to apply. A structured preceptorship programme and comprehensive training will be provided to help you transition confidently into professional practice.
You will join the team on Tunstall Ward, an acute admission ward providing specialist care for working-age women with mental health needs. The ward environment promotes recovery-focused care, compassion and collaborative teamwork.
Your Contribution
As a Staff Nurse, you will play a key role in improving the wellbeing of patients by providing safe, therapeutic and person-centred care.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Delivering high-quality nursing care that supports recovery and wellbeing
- Acting as a named nurse, coordinating individual care plans for patients
- Carrying out clinical and therapeutic interventions within your professional scope
- Promoting dignity, respect and compassion in all patient interactions
- Supporting students and junior staff in their learning and development
- Contributing to the daily operational management of the ward
- Promoting a positive image of mental health services within the Trust and wider community
Key Responsibilities
Patient Care and Safety
- Ensure patients’ dignity, privacy and safety are maintained at all times
- Carry out comprehensive risk assessments and care planning
- Recognise potential safeguarding concerns and take appropriate action
- Deliver evidence-based care in partnership with patients and their families
Clinical Practice
- Assess patients’ needs and provide appropriate clinical interventions
- Safely administer and manage medications according to professional guidelines
- Follow relevant legislation such as the Mental Health Act and Mental Capacity Act
- Maintain high professional standards and accurate clinical documentation
Multidisciplinary Collaboration
Patients on Tunstall Ward benefit from care delivered by a diverse multidisciplinary team (MDT) including:
- Medical professionals
- Psychologists
- Occupational therapists
- Physiotherapists
- Speech and language therapists
- Dietitians
- Physical healthcare specialists
Daily MDT discussions support comprehensive assessments and help guide treatment, recovery planning and discharge arrangements.

Person Specification
Essential Qualifications
Applicants must have:
- Current registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council
- Qualification as a Registered Mental Health Nurse (RMN), Learning Disability Nurse (RNLD), or equivalent (depending on service needs)
- Evidence of continuing professional development
- Commitment to becoming a practice assessor or mentor within an agreed timeframe
Essential Experience
Candidates should demonstrate experience in:
- Supporting individuals with mental health conditions or learning disabilities
- Working in a person-centred therapeutic environment
- Collaborating with service users, families and carers
- Working effectively within multidisciplinary healthcare teams
- Partnering with external organisations and community agencies
Essential Knowledge
Applicants should have a working understanding of:
- Evidence-based nursing practice in mental health care
- Relevant legislation including the Mental Health Act and Mental Capacity Act
- Safeguarding responsibilities and procedures
- Clinical risk assessment and management
- Medicines management, including administration of injections
Compliance and Safeguarding
- This role requires a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check due to direct patient contact.
