Role Overview
Oakhaven Hospice is seeking a compassionate and experienced Staff Nurse to support patients receiving end-of-life and palliative care. The successful candidate will play an important role in ensuring patients receive respectful, personalised care in a supportive hospice environment.
This position is ideal for nurses who want more time to focus on patient wellbeing and holistic care while working alongside a multidisciplinary team.
Key Responsibilities
As a Staff Nurse, your primary responsibilities will include:
Patient Care
- Assess individual patient needs and develop appropriate care plans.
- Deliver high-quality nursing care throughout the 24-hour care cycle.
- Monitor patient conditions and evaluate the effectiveness of care provided.
- Provide emotional and practical support to patients and their families during difficult stages of illness.
Clinical Duties
- Administer medication in accordance with professional standards and organisational policies.
- Assist with clinical procedures and treatments when required.
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date nursing records for every shift.
- Report changes in patient condition to the Nurse in Charge.
Communication & Teamwork
- Participate in multidisciplinary team discussions regarding patient care.
- Maintain effective communication with healthcare professionals, patients, and families.
- Share information during handovers to ensure continuity of care.
Professional Practice
- Follow hospice policies and procedures at all times.
- Uphold the professional standards outlined by the Nursing and Midwifery Council.
- Protect patient confidentiality and dignity.
- Contribute to the smooth operation of the hospice ward environment.

Essential Requirements
Professional Experience
- Minimum 2 years of post-qualification nursing experience in the UK.
- Experience caring for patients with palliative care or oncology needs is highly desirable.
- Ability to work effectively in a multidisciplinary healthcare team.
- Experience using electronic patient record systems and standard IT tools.
Qualifications
- Registered Nurse qualification (RGN).
- Current registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council.
- Evidence of ongoing professional development.
- Degree-level education or equivalent professional experience.
Personal Attributes
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Compassionate and patient-centred approach to care.
- Ability to discuss sensitive end-of-life issues with empathy and professionalism.
- Flexible attitude towards day and night shift patterns.
Desirable Qualifications
- Additional training or qualifications in palliative care, oncology, or cancer nursing.
- Teaching or mentoring experience.
- Training in communication skills for difficult conversations.
