About the Role
Brighton and Sussex Medical School (BSMS) is inviting applications for a Clinical Associate Professor or Professor of Oncology (depending on experience), who will also hold an honorary consultant appointment at University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust (UHSFT).
We are seeking an academic clinician with a strong record in clinical trials to provide clinical leadership as the Clinical Director for the Brighton and Sussex Clinical Trials Unit (CTU). The postholder will play a pivotal role in expanding the oncology research portfolio across Sussex through collaboration with the Sussex Cancer Centre and the Health and Care Research Partnership.
This senior academic role combines research, education, and clinical service, with significant responsibility for developing grant-funded oncology research and mentoring clinical academics.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and develop a research programme in oncology, with emphasis on clinical trials.
- Provide strategic and clinical leadership for the Brighton and Sussex Clinical Trials Unit (2 PAs allocated).
- Strengthen collaborations across BSMS, UHSFT, and partner organisations in the Sussex Cancer Research Centre (SCRC).
- Support the growth of oncology-focused research and trial activity within the Trust.
- Increase research income and improve clinical trial recruitment in solid and haematological malignancies.
- Contribute to undergraduate and postgraduate medical education, offering leadership in oncology teaching.
- Mentor and support research-active NHS and academic colleagues.
- Engage externally to promote academic–clinical partnerships across the South East region.
About You
You will be an experienced Medical or Clinical Oncologist, holding a CCT in your specialty, with a proven record in clinical research leadership and education.
You should demonstrate:
- Evidence of independent research achievement, ideally in clinical trials.
- Experience in academic leadership, research management, and mentorship.
- Commitment to high-quality teaching and student development.
- Strong collaborative skills across academic and clinical environments.
- Eligibility for registration with the GMC and appointment as an Honorary NHS Consultant.
For appointment at Professorial level, candidates must show national or international recognition, sustained excellence in research and innovation, and leadership contributions within medical education and service delivery.
