Job Description

Dorset County Hospital NHS Foundation Trust is currently seeking a dedicated Registered Nurse to join the Dorset Lung Cancer Screening Service (also known as the NHS Lung Cancer Screening Programme in the region).

This exciting opportunity supports the rollout of a targeted lung health screening initiative across Dorset. The programme reaches out to individuals aged 55–74 who currently smoke or have a significant history of smoking, offering them a lung health check to help detect lung cancer at the earliest possible stage.

As part of the NHS Long Term Plan (published in 2019), the NHS has committed to ensuring that 75% of cancers are diagnosed early (stages 1 or 2) by 2028 — a goal that this service directly helps achieve by identifying issues sooner and improving outcomes for patients.

In this key role, you’ll provide essential administrative and coordination support to help establish and run a comprehensive, pan-Dorset lung cancer screening pathway. Working within a close-knit multidisciplinary team, you’ll play a vital part in delivering high-quality, patient-focused care.

Please note: Previous applicants for this position do not need to reapply.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Reviewing and assessing participants’ eligibility using the national risk assessment criteria.
  • Explaining the screening process clearly and accessibly to patients, ensuring they fully understand what to expect.
  • Managing participant lists and maintaining precise, up-to-date records in Excel spreadsheets and the Trust’s electronic systems.
  • Handling patient enquiries professionally  from appointment scheduling and rescheduling to addressing any concerns about procedures.
  • Providing clear guidance on preparation for tests or scans, and emphasising the benefits of attending the earliest available appointment.
  • Collaborating closely with the Lung Cancer Screening nurses and clinical team to escalate any clinical questions appropriately.
  • Coordinating with radiologists, consultants, lead nurses, and coordinators to keep patients on the right follow-up pathways.
  • Updating patient tracker lists and personal data accurately.
Arranging CT scans in line with protocol.
  • Referring suitable participants to the Lung Cancer Nurse Specialist team.
  • Recording outcomes, documenting key findings, and escalating issues promptly when needed.
