SOAS is Europe’s leading higher education institution specialising in Asia, Africa, and the Near and Middle East. We’re reshaping global higher education with an ambitious new strategic plan that prioritises research intensity, student engagement, and global partnerships—especially across the Global South.

The Role

We are seeking an exceptional Lecturer in Economics to join our dynamic and mission-driven Department of Economics. The successful candidate will play a vital role in advancing our teaching and research in heterodox economics and political economy, with a regional focus that may include Asia, Africa, the Middle East, Latin America, or Europe.

You will contribute to:

  • Delivering high-quality teaching in microeconomic theory, industrial economics, and mixed-methods approaches, including econometrics and data science (desirable).
  • Producing high-impact research aligned with the themes of our Department and the Centre for Sustainable Structural Transformation (CSST).
  • Supporting strategic initiatives, including the SOAS-UJ joint MPhil/PhD programme on Sustainable Industrial Development and Policy.
  • Strengthening SOAS’s academic profile through publications, student mentorship, and engagement with global policy debates.

You will have, or be near completion of, a PhD in Economics or a closely related field, along with a strong record of research, teaching, and academic service.

About the Department

The SOAS Department of Economics is internationally recognised for its leadership in development economics, political economy, and heterodox approaches, particularly through a Global South lens.

Key research themes include:

  • Structural transformation and industrial policy
  • Institutions, governance, and finance
  • Nutrition, health, and development
  • Informal economies and labour markets
  • Poverty, inequality, and welfare institutions
  • Feminist political economy and ecological macroeconomics

Our research informs global policy on issues like anti-corruption, green transition financing, and inclusive post-conflict development. We equip students with both theoretical frameworks and practical tools to tackle today’s global economic challenges.
